Solid Ys game overall, made even better by the fact that there's 3 characters to play as with varying playstyles and story alterations. On the downside, running through dungeon floors mashing away at mooks gets pretty old, especially spread out across 3 playthroughs. Didn't find the story too engaging either, with lots of predictable and cheesy moments. The bosses were the highlights here, as standard for the Ys series. Overall, a good Ys game but still just more of the same.

Excellent level and boss design, but I got really sick of playing the game by the end since you have go to through it three times for the true ending. Has the best version of Termination.

didn't like playing as the fact boy, but it's fun and the music slaps

Great boss design, levels, and music. Sucks that you need to play through the game 3 times though.

Just really solid top-down action with 3 unique playstyles. Issue is that Yunica's the least fun and the most disconnected from the (painfuly mediocre) story and some bosses are tedious, but still a blast.

I hate Hugo Fact but this has some of the greatest gameplay of any game. Masterpiece (if you overlook Hugo Fact).

really wasn't expecting to love this as much as i did! very nice combat and fun level traversal. played all three routes and absolutely loved it.

Great soundtrack, great gameplay, three different characters. One of the Ys series's best.

more people need to play this

Ys Origin is a game that i don't really have a whole lot to say about. It is a nice and simple game which i'm ok with. The combat is just fine, although i do wish there was more to do with it. The music is the expected Falcom-tier of quality, although i do wish there was a bit more variety. When both the boss themes and the area themes use electric guitars, it can end up feeling a little samey. As for the story and characters, it doesn't really matter if i'm being completely honest.

My biggest gripe with the game is the bosses and the way levels are handled. I don't think i've really enjoyed a single boss fight in this game because almost all of them are basically bullet hells with zero health pickups. This ties into the way levels are handled because just one level makes or breaks the fight. If you're one level below the boss, you'll get your ass kicked. One level over and it becomes a cakewalk. It's so stupid and the way this is handled is a big enough gripe for me that 6/10 is the highest score i can give it.

This game has three routes, i only did one (Yunica) and even if i liked the game more, i would not be playing it two more times in a row. That's just asking for burnout.

I don't even know if i'll replay it tbh, the bosses really do suck.

fun romp. everyone's fun to play as long as your name isn't hugo. as a fan of metroid i welcomed the exploration and power up collecting. the use of powers as multi-faceted abilities outside of purely damage was very cool and made the gameplay more and more rewarding to pick up on. characters are obviously the weakest part of this game, but yunica and the third character plus a few others left a strong impression on me (hugo for the wrong reasons). definitely give it a whirl if you can.

Hugo route first, don't repeat that mistake. I'll get to Yunica eventually

I did 3 runs of this game back to back, and I honestly got burnt out but holy shit I still had fun. The characters are so fun to play as, and my only issue is that some areas have a bit too much down time that makes them dull. Also getting all the skills is a huge grind fest, but I did that with everyone but Toal.

I really didn't like any of the other characters besides Yunica, it felt like they just broke the game in boring ways, but the outside of that it's good as hell.

Really great, the structure makes for a very satisfying experience climbing that giant and varied dungeon and the music just adds to this feeling of excitement and hype. It gets a little tiring at moments, but still very worth playing.

The intuitions learned from Oath in Felghana are fully realized in Ys Origin, that boasts the series most refined, engrossing combat system yet. Ys' prequel also shifts its world dramatically, entirely level-based as opposed to the more open progression of those before it. While the combat itself shares the repetition of The Oath in Felghana, it only lasts until halfway through the game. From there, the combat's speed and flow begin to shine as the player obtains new abilities. Add to that the multiple different selectable characters and Ys Origin easily boasts the most replay value; not to mention the frustrating nature of the previous game's boss battles have been toned down to a perfect balance of challenging and tolerable.

fun bosses? AND tolerable dungeons?? in MY early-mid 2000s ys game??? its more likely than you think

el gameplay y las dungeons estan que te cagas, si no fuese porque el juego en cualquier dificultad te pide un grindeo absurdo facilmente seria 4,5/5

Since I had no exposure to it prior to playing the Switch version, I was not expecting this game to be as fun as it is. It's definitely one of my favorite dungeon crawlers.

great game with really good music, fun combat and some charming visuals despite being 15 years old

Played the game 2 and a half years ago and only played Hugo's story and didn't realize you needed to play all 3 character's stories to get the true ending.

2 and a half years later I'm a massive Falcom fanboy due to falling in love with the Trails series, so fast forward to November 23rd of 2020 and I figured I should start playing more Ys, decided to replay this one knowing I only got a piece of the story last time I played it and I have to say it was very worth it.

Ys isn't really known for being the most story focused and is more about the gameplay (Which I found very enjoyable in Origin) and exploration, but what story there was in this game was quite engaging and emotional at times and the main characters were pretty interesting and had good development too. It's a very classic J-RPG story, (knights on a mission to save their goddesses from demons who want to use their power and rule over the land), but it's a good one all the same and I'd highly recommend it.

Also the game has another masterful OST by Falcom Sound Team JDK featuring some of their absolute best tracks yet like Silent Desert and Genesis Beyond the Beginning.

Pretty good 2nd best Ark engine game

I really like the graphics. I always want to pick it up again but remember the really long unskippable intro

A very close second to Oath in Felghana in my Ys series rankings. Everything is close to perfect ARPG goodness. The only issue with this game is that dialogue is unskippable, and there's quite a lot of dialogue, which is quite a bother in subsequent playthroughs especially since this game more than any other Ys game is meant to be played through many times.

Decent combat bosses are a little jank but the story is very neat and the combat itself is simple but very effective.

Fun game that I didn't really like playing three times
