The unintentional depth this game created resulted in one of the most interesting gaming communities to ever exist and turned this franchise from a “party game” to a full blown fighting game. There is plenty to do in this game from a solo player aspect, but you can only really experience the greatness of this game with friends. My only complaint is a nitpicky one that can only be validated by present day standards, but this game has a rather small roster of characters and no way to turn off stage hazards. At the time of release this didn’t matter much, but compared to Smash Ultimate your choices for viable characters and balanced stages is scarce.

I would love to dedicate some time to this game and "git gud".

The year is 20XX. Everyone plays Fox at TAS levels of perfection. Because of this, the winner of a match depends solely on port priority. The Rock Paper Scissors metagame has evolved to ridiculous levels due to it being the only remaining factor to decide matches. Humanity has reached its pinnacle. The low tier peasants are living in poverty. It seems nothing can stop the great leader of 20XX, Aziz “Hax” Al-Yami, and his army, the Fox monks who live in great monasteries where they levitate while TASing Fox with one hand, and winning tournaments with the other. The tournament metagame has gotten to this point where everything is played out to theoretical perfection, so tournament goers play Rock Paper Scissors for port priority, and that’s the game.

Super Smash Bros. Melee is a chaotic, high-octane fighting game that throws iconic Nintendo characters into explosive battles. The gameplay is lightning fast and surprisingly deep, with intricate mechanics like wavedashing that reward dedicated players. Melee boasts a vast roster, addictive multiplayer, and numerous modes, offering endless amounts of fun. With its vibrant visuals and smooth performance, it set the standard for platform fighters and is considered a timeless classic by many.

Played again at my local shop had a much better time

Fun, but overhyped. Single player is a slog and the controls are iffy.

I like it for sure but I have some problems with it, for 1 the controls feel very dated and took alot of getting used to, and 2 it isn't "fun" in the way games like Brawl or Ultimate are the combo game is nuts but it feels like it's missing something tho, will play again at a later point

Not my thing but I will never not be impressed by the fanbase dedication

Overrated as hell but still a great Smash game

I mean its a favourite for many for a reason

I remember my dumbass bought this for the Wii in 2014. My stupid ass couldn't figure out that I needed a gamecube controller in order to play because I didn't even know what the hell a gamecube was fr fr. So, I never got to play this game despite owning a copy lol.

I can wavedash! THat makes it a good video game

I've played it. . . idk what to say about it tho

When I was younger, I never got why so many people stuck with this game when Brawl and eventually Smash 4 & Ultimate would come to have so many more characters and much more content. But one day I started playing the game with a more serious effort, and it clicked. No Smash game has ever gotten even half as fun as this one in terms of movement, feel, and general competition. Melee is so unbelievably fun on a competitive and even casual level. I don't have much else to say, as every praise this game could receive has already been sung to the high heavens at this point.

Accidentally the GOAT of Smash Bros. fighting games because the skill ceiling is mind-bogglingly high. For us mere mortals, it's an improvement in every way on the N64 predecessor but mostly superseded by later entries. That said, if I had a Gamecube handy, I'd still go back and play this on occasion.

Unlocking some characters is ass but the game itself is fun.

MY FAVOURITE SMASH BROS (again, I have gamecube bias)

stop saying melee is the best smash game, you're not cool

Can see why its a favorite of many.

One of the best aged games ever. The competitive scene for this game is still alive and it has some of the best mechanics for any fighting game. It improves on the first game in every aspect. The casual content for this game is very good too.
