Reviews from

in the past

I have the tendency to post a lot of lazy reviews, usually talking shit about a clearly mediocre movie-to-video-game release, piling onto what has already been accepted as a train wreck, or making an easy joke in an attempt to make one of you folks smile. Like, most of the reviews I post on this site are either "haha yeah this game IS bad" or, if I'm feeling like I have something interestingly critical to contribute, "no, this currently alleged masterpiece is mid actually and here's why", but very rarely do I stick out my neck to openly and proudly declare something excellent, and with a confident five stars.

You can probably tell where I'm going with this.

I'll put it this way: I have been playing Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising almost nonstop since it released a little over five months ago. As a fighting game, it does so much for me. There are the usual issues I expect to run into, like balance issues and mechanical decisions I disagree with, along with a slew of bugs that somehow keep popping up every patch, but I love it all the same. Combo structure makes sense to me. The push and pull of offense and defense is skewed in a way that I understand. I'm finally getting a grasp on Street Fighteresque neutral. It's helping me learn so much about fighting game fundamentals that years of playing Super Smash Bros. Melee never bothered to teach. The art direction is pretty, and I've been having a blast unlocking different colors and weapons to mix and match to make the characters look all nice.

And then I play Lethal League Blaze online with some friends for a few minutes and it blows Granblue out of the stratosphere.

The premise is this: a fighting game, but instead of hitting your opponent, you hit a ball at your opponent, it bounces around faster and faster with every hit, and if you get hit by it when it goes fast enough, you explode.

Every single play session, without fail, I say "god damn this game is good" out loud. The soundtrack rules, the aesthetics are excellent, the push-and-pull of knowing when to bunt, throw, or attack the ball head-on is so simple, yet presents such depth most games don't even try to reach.

It just...fuckin' rocks.

Lethal League Blaze takes such obvious influence from the Super Smash Bros. series, from the "easy to pick up, hard to master" design philosophy of hitting a ball in different ways, to the chaotic multi-player modes featuring power-ups and items. It's straightforward, but leaves room for player expression. The character designs are some of the most fun I've seen in a video game, I mean, look at this boombox dude with giant arms who flies around lookin' like his wardrobe was pulled straight out of Gurren Lagann and tell me he isn't top-tier character design. There's also this baseball guy who is made of baseball. And then this robot rides a skateboard and can ride upside-down on the ceiling. I mean, you've gotta be kidding me with how cool this is.

Also Candyman.

As I get older and I find myself yearning for the old feeling of staying over friends' houses on weekends for birthday parties and staying up way too late eating pizza and playing video games without a care in the world and the dopamine rush of having pure untainted fun, Lethal League Blaze is a strong reminder for me that video games just...rule. It's a perfect package of everything I find fun about the medium. Bright colors, engaging gameplay, and excellent shared experiences among close friends.

Ain't NOTHIN' like a funky beat.

cool style but I am not playing 1000 matches get real

Pretty unique fighting game. The art direction is pretty charming. Actual gameplay is adrenaline pumping... even if you're not hitting your opponents directly. Also a lot of fun with friends.

pourquoi personne veut y jouer :(

Hype as fuck, but also easy to understand!

I bought the soundtrack years before I bought the game.

a nice break from traditional fighting games for me and close buddies we play dis shit and whack balls all up on each others faces and its so fucking fun and i like the style of the game too. The music def shit u could b fuckin to :)

A stylistically great game with some really unique gameplay that’s hard to put down. It’s very easy to get into and very fun to try to learn more of as you get more and more into it. There isn’t a whole lot of content, but there doesn’t need to be. Highly recommended.

Can get a little stale after a while but there's a real high skill ceiling so. Hard to consider this a fighting game lol.

Ball goes KABOOOM!!!

really unique and fun fighting game, you dont need crazy mechanics or learn combos to play well, but there is still a huge learning curve and its so fun to master. i played this with a group of first time friends and it was still pretty balanced. timing your hits and having the ball go faster and faster makes for really high stakes matches.

An incredible fighting game that’s gets everything right that a casual and competitive fan would be looking for. Fast and complex gameplay, eye catching character designs, outstanding music, with a flashiness that puts most traditional fighting games to shame. A must have for any fighting game player that wants to shake things up from a more traditional 2D fighter.

This is it. My favorite fighting game. It legitimately feels like it was made specifically for me. Awesome characters, amazing soundtrack, sick visuals, high speed combat and pure chaos. There's no other way to put it, it's just fire.

this game has given me the most "i'm the greatest player alive/i fucking hate video games" flip-flopping i've ever experienced and i love it for that

Really fun and actually unique fighting style game. It`s kinda difficult to master and really get good at this, but having a go at this one with friends is something you won`t regret.

This is one of the most clever twists on fighting games I've played, and so far the only fighting-game-adjacent game I've gotten my smashie friends to actually give a chance to and enjoy.

It's a platform fighter like smash but the big gimmick is, instead of hitting each other, you hit a ball that is constantly moving in a line and reflects off the walls. Every time you hit the ball, it goes faster. There are various ways you can hit the ball: you can hit it, (adds a little speed) smash it (adds alot of speed), bunt it(stops it no matter its speed) and character's supers interact with the ball in many different ways. You can hit in different directions, you gotta consider how the opponent will react, how the ball will bounce off the walls, etc.

Get hit by the ball, receive damage. The faster the ball hits you, the more damage you take. If the ball goes fast enough, it's an OHKO.

It's such a simple but brilliant spin on the formula and extremely fun. Wrap that up in a Jet Set Radio/late 90s Shibuya punk aesthetic with a bangin' soundtrack and you've got a hell of a game.

I really can't stress how great this game is - easily the most underrated fighting game of the modern era. In a just world, Lethal League Blaze would be mainstage at Evo, but instead we thrive in the shadows of grassroots events.

LLB strikes a perfect balance between being easy to pick up and have fun, while at the highest skill bracket being one of the most mechanically demanding and rewarding experiences of any fighting game ever.

The freeform nature of combat via the ball promotes a huge range of viable playstyles. Likewise, LLB has a great balance between creative offensive opportunities through angles, specials, and parrybaits, while maintaining rich defensive options accentuated through positioning and movement.

The diverse roster of characters has fostered new competitive discoveries even 5 years after the initial release, while the focus on system mechanics ensures that the cast is extremely well balanced. It's particularly

The community for this game is deeply passionate, primarily found on the LLB Stadium Discord, where we continue to host tournaments and other events while official support for the game has long moved on. It's still very easy to learn the game with the monthly new player tournaments and mentorship programmes, while the top level continues to evolve even after 1000s of hours of playtime logged.

If you want to see the top level of this game in action, you can find the VOD from Combo Breaker (commentated by me!)

If you want to learn more about the mechanics I'd recommend Desselie's Toxic Guide, even as a character specific guide it covers loads of fundamentals for all characters.

Please play this game and join the community, it changed my life for the better.

Just don't play the single player modes, they suck!

everybody in team reptile finna' get a big wet kiss

The "fighting" game of all time.

Seriously though, I love this game to death. It perfectly executes a bizarre and utterly unique idea for a refreshing twist on the fighting game genre. It keeps the same basic rock-paper-scissors idea that all fighting games are based on, but instead of attack/block/grab, it is an anti-gravity bouncing baseball moving at 8000 mph that you could hit/spike/punt/grab/parry/special. It's simple enough, "Hit the ball and don't get hit by the ball," which makes for really fun casual fights. But there is so much depth here that's lots of fun to dig into once you get the hang of it. I wish this game was bigger than it actually is. It deserves the world and more. Not to mention the art style and music. 10/10
