Much of Sunset Overdrive's humor didn't land for me, but what Sunset Overdrive does well is showcase how excellent Insomniac is at making fun action titles. Perhaps the most underrated game from Insomniac's catalog, Sunset Overdrive's colorful and enjoyable design makes it a fun romp that many should take the plunge into at some point or another. Not many games have personality like this one does, and sometimes you really need a palette cleanser in the midst of many other grounded, more serious experiences. If the humor landed, I think I'd enjoy it much more, but it's attempts only come across as cheesy or just straight-up cringy (hate using that word, but it's apt) at times. It also doesn't do anything remarkable either, and it really only succeeds at being a fun video game to play, which I can appreciate.

Fun movement and high action gameplay, a real gem which got completely overlooked by the majority of people. Super goofy story which doesnt take itself too seriously, nothing overly complex or needlessly intricate, fun ALWAYS comes first in this game. Highly approved!

this game is so frustrating because it's made by insomniac, the pioneers of the weird and fun gun/platforming genre, but this game has some of the most lazy, cowardly writing you could possibly imagine. any kind of sincerity is traded off for bad 4th wall breaking jokes and trying to act "above it all." it's like the devs are actively challenging you to give a shit, and props to them, they made an utterly unlikable cast of characters, most specifically the main one! this game is the perfect litmus test to see if someone actually thinks gameplay is more important than storytelling and if a game can still be good if it has bad writing, because i can't think of another game that ruins itself more with that.
