I’m gonna echo what a lot of people have said about this game but dang what a cool concept that just isn’t quite there execution wise.

Being able to evolve your character and alter your stats based on what you pick is super cool! I didn’t even mind the fact your character resets a few times over the course of the game. The fact there’s even some secret things you can evolve makes the game feel so much bigger.

But man actually playing it is just such a slog. Good thing the game isn’t super long. It really boils down to find an area with easy enough enemies to kill, grind up EVO points, get stronger, fight next bigger thing. Also for me even when I became super strong there were a few bosses that felt near impossible to beat (Thank you save states).

It’s really too bad cause the game has really nice sprite work and even a pretty interesting story overall. Perhaps there’s a romhack version that fixes these problems but honestly I’d love to just see a spiritual successor cause there is a great game hidden in this one.

The idea is really cool, but I thought it became really boring at some point and abandoned it. It was a long time ago so I'm not sure on that, though.

Amazing idea for a game and a good game for the collection. But the hitbox and hitstun in the game ruin it. Many of the bosses kill you instantly becuase of lack of hitstun, and enemies are boring to kill. I don't know why there are so many mini-stages in each chapter, it just breaks the flow of the game when you run in a straight line for 10 seconds just to get put back to the overworld. People are right, this game is overrated and does not belong in the SNES hall of fame.

excellent game to play while something else is running in the background. it's grindy at times, but this is a journey of life across a billion years. what better excuse is there for a grind?

I would think less of E.V.O. if I didn't enjoy the concept of it so much. hopping around and chomping at stuff doesn't actually feel that great, which is accentuated on the boss fights. I was mostly looking forward to seeing how each evolution would change my primordial pal's stats/abilities and more importantly how he looked. can't think of many other games that let me have a horse-bodied, hippo-jawed, antler-having brachiosaurus.

Um dos melhores jogos de Super Nintendo

ideia genial, execução meia bomba

Very unique, it was the spore creature stage before spore was even an idea in Will Wright's mind. A bit of a shame about the grind, but the game is good and this is not a deal breaker.

Emotionally fragile adult VS game where after you kill a boss, their child comes looking for them 😥

Interesting and original. If it wasn't for the grind and poor interface this could be one of the classics.

The most bumbling depiction of evolution I've seen yet. It's Pretty Good.

joguei a muito tempo. bem difícil, porém os gráficos e músicas são bons na minha opinião, o que mais me prendeu nesse jogo foi pelo fato dele contar sobre a evolução de espécies (quase isso), e eu curto jogos que exploram isso

I wish there was a true spiritual successor to this game! The concept of evolving through eras is a cool idea, and treating it like an RPG where you sort of level yourself up by developing new traits is a great progression system. I think the game is a little uneven, with some eras being far more fun than others (especially through the mammal era), and it can get a little grindy without a diverse enough gameplay loop to justify it. But, it's still a fun game that deserves some love!

Imagine Ecco the Dolphin as done by Square Enix. A majestic platforming romp spanning billions of years, which is even more amazing than it sounds. Start as a tiny fish and evolve as you progress, until you're an axe-wielding caveman. The final boss is COVID-19.

this game captured my imagination in a way that just was the best. i did try playing it again at a much later date and it's actually surprisingly grindy, but it's still wonderful.

Really bizarre game and concept overall, not dissimilar to something like Spore except much earlier. There are times where it feels a bit too grindy, and the bosses are much harder than the actual stages, but ultimately I think it survives the weight of its ambitions. I enjoyed this pretty thoroughly, even if it was rough around the edges and not exactly amazing. I thought it was very fun and rewarding to experiment with all the different evolutionary traits it provides your character. By the end of the game I had become this weird lion-horse hybrid of sorts.

It'll definitely take some patience, especially without savestates, but I would recommend this one. There's not really anything like it from the time.

MASTERPIECE!
