What do you mean Hikari is not a girl???

The top of the pantheon of real time strategy, the game abandons one of the fundaments of the genre - terrain, topography, obstacles, chockepoints and defensible positions - and yet creates one of the most in-depth strategy games ever made. Faction advantadges and special units are abandoned, and instead players are only differentiated by tactical skill and micromanagement. There is nothing to hide behind, the most skilled commander wins.

Unforgetable campaign and haunting OST, the emptiness of the maps complemented it perfectly. The slow pace of the in betweens highlighting the lonely feeling in such a vast space, punctuated between high-pressure combat where a single mistakes sinks the fleet.

It is the most beautiful rts ever made.

You play as a philosophical and literal zombie at the whims of gods who don't care. One of them is even funny.

I don't think in the 30 following years of FPS's we've come close to what Durandal and Infinity have done. The genre built upon power fantasies put you in the shoes of an enhanced human, a perfect killing machine, yet our actions are minimazed in the face of much superior opponents and literal reality-warping mechanisms. The power fantasy is dismantled and replaced by abstraction, upon which the Cyborg is a tool, and not even at all times fully aware of who is his master.
