This one just pips Super Castlevania IV for me!

I prefer the style, the sound and the animations. The whip feels the most satisfying it’s felt yet, with enemies severing in half or exploding into 100 pieces. I may go back and try the Lecarde character’a spear.

The difficulty is much more suited to my “expertise”, with nothing ever feeling impossible. The latter bosses are enjoyable compared with previous games frustrating late game bosses.

Speaking of the bosses, I loved every single one. Each one was well done and interesting.

My one gripe would be the France level. That was a little annoying but a very minor point. Oh, and f**k the spiral staircase!

Overall, this was my favourite Castlevania experience so far!

A big improvement on its predecessor!

It’s colourful, controls perfectly and is very, very fun!

A big step up in level variety and more mechanics, enemies and surprises are added. Less stages but making them longer and more interesting is a welcome improvement.

It’s not difficult but the difficulty ramps up by the end. There’s a lot of luck needed due to the pace of the game.

I especially enjoyed the egg man boss battles, especially the pinball stage. And the final 2 stages and the surprises within them are epic.

An absolutely timeless classic! This will always be fun to play!

So, there is some nostalgia talking here. But millions of people can’t be wrong. Super Mario World was the first game I ever played on the first games console I ever owned, the Super Nintendo. I was so young, I wasn’t skilled enough to play it in its entirety with all the secret exits and what not, but replaying it recently means I can now truly appreciate the content in this game.

It sends you to a happy place. Comforting music. Bright, colourful, complex levels. Awesome characters. And fantastic, engaging gameplay.

Being honest, it smashes Super Mario Bros 3 out of the park (nostalgia talking?). Mario controls better. The levels are much more complex. The over-world is much more interesting. And my main gripe with SMB is corrected in that they added some much needed boss variety.

Just returning to the level design, it’s top notch. If you mainlined the game, no secret levels, it would still be great. But there are so many secrets to find and it’s so satisfying when you do.

I really cannot think of a bad thing to say about this game. There’s still some 2D Mario games I’m yet to play but I already know this cannot be topped.
