Ridge Racer
2004
Really fun, loads of content, fast cars. It's just a great racing game all around. Very arcade-y. It's exactly what I want from a game like this honestly. I do have a few complaints though, aside from the game feeling a bit repetitive at a certain point.
Other people go into this a bit, but this game is very much "on rails." You start a drift and as long as you aren't steering in the opposite direction from where you're supposed to be turning, you'll probably be able to make any turn you want. It's fine and dandy as a mechanic, but some sections feel as if they require you to exploit the system to make the turn without hitting a wall. If I'm going over 200 mph and approaching a section of small, precise, punishing turns in alternating directions (like that one spot on Crimsonrock Pass), I'll often turn my car entirely sideways and let Jesus take the wheel. It works about 95% of the time and I hardly lose any speed lmao.
I had also planned on getting 100% in this game, that was until I unlocked the MAX tours. I played the first race maybe 30 times until I finally managed to get lucky enough to come out in first over the cheating AI with infinite boost, immovable cars, and instantly go 30+ mph faster than me when I pass them. It was ridiculous. I tried the next race a couple of times but eventually decided I was just gonna leave the game at that. It just wasn't fun at all. It didn't feel rewarding having to rely on the stars aligning to win, let alone for almost 30 races more. I don't even want to think about how long that would take either.
This was just a small portion of the game though, ~6 or 7 tours of almost 50 across the entire game. The races right before unlocking MAX were an amazing victory lap-feeling experience for the end of the game too, with a great balance of difficulty and straight-up fun. I especially loved the special angel and devil tours. Felt like a great way to end such a fun and fast game, just you and some fantastical cars on empty roads running through some beautiful maps with bright lights and tight turns. Loved this, even with the sour experience I had near the end. I wish every game made me feel as cool as Ridge Racer.

Didn't feel this. You have 12 weapons, one for each Chinese zodiac sign, and I'm here to tell you that that is too many weapons.
I'm convinced that scrolling tube shooters like this just don't work as deep, replayable arcade experiences. They are often flashy and fun to look at and mess around with for half-an-hour (as this is!), but who's actually sitting down with one for many hours and mastering it? It's all too slippery, visibility of oncoming threats is (definitionally, on account of the tube perspective) shit, and they all use the same formula of psychedelic visuals and techno music because... what else are you gonna do? It's a tube.
I dunno, if anyone has any really hot tube game recommendations, send 'em my way. (Tempest, a static vector tube shooter, is cool and doesn't count)

Let’s not pretend as if we can’t put aside shitty story for sick gameplay when RE4 who’s script was written in a matter of weeks is one of the highest rated games on this site. The physics based puzzles shit all over your typical “get object for locked door” survival horror puzzles that are shamelessly spammed all over the place and don’t receive half as much flack, even figuring out fighting the enemies is more puzzle-like as you have to create makeshift weaponry either with actual crafting or grabbing furniture and putting the enemies to sleep with them, it’s all about on the spot improvisation and it’s sick.
I already had a high opinion on the 7th-gen but this game cemented it as one of my favorites, the more I delve into it’s library the more I notice how many elements it shares with the 6th and yet the contrast between their receptions couldn’t be any wider, I am asking this genuinely, where did all the people who enjoyed the 6th-gen go? I feel like if some of the more praised titles from that gen were to release during the 7th they’d face just as harsh of a reception. The most common complaint you hear about the state of gaming now is how everything plays the same and there’s a distinct lack of creativity, well, what the fuck did any of you expect would happen when the moment any game experimented and didn’t go with the design trends of the time, it was met with lackluster reception, one dogged on title after another mixed in with the sharp increase of development costs pretty much killed creativity in this medium for good unless some miracle happens.

The very definition of a one trick pony. Has amazing gunplay and movement but is mediocre or downright bad at everything else. Enemy synergy and map design are awful. The art style is all over the place but doesn't manage to feel like a complete package, like other games who take advantage of dissonance in artistic direction do. Sound and music varies from okay to good. Nothing special there.
If you only care about gunplay, get this game. If you like a more well rounded experience, there's far better FPS games out there.
