uhhh maybe ultima with ultima underworld?

Aren't there like seven Ultima games that predate Underworld?

Thank you though for making me think Ultima though, because Akalabeth fits what I'm thinking of perfectly. Kicking myself for forgetting that one!

woops very true! I neglected to think that previously successful series probably wouldn't apply

I think Shining in the Darkness/Shining Force would count for this!

Duke Nukem 1 & 2? They were platformers that spawned the whole Duke 3D series

@letshugbro I did consider DN because those first games ARE super overlooked (but not by me! I played them then and still like them now!) but really it's all the same series, it just took a turn. We even got some more platformers later.

Would final fantasy 4 heroes of light -> bravely default count?

Ricochet -> Portal

system shock -> bioshock

smt if -> persona, radiant silvergun -> ikaruga, final fantasy legend -> romancing saga, final fantasy adventure -> secret of mana. radiata stories -> radiant historia (not that either are overwhelmingly popular, but radiant historia is a bit more recognizable)
