Dtown commented on Dtown's review of NieR
@NOWITSREYNTIME17 not really. NieR: Gestalt (known as just NIER in the west) doesn't fit Yoko Taro's vision of NieR: RepliCant as Papa NieR was made with the exclusive purpose of marketing NieR: RepliCant to a NA audience. The change of a young boy to an adult man is equivalent to how Kirby was given an angry face in the North American box art of his games. Likewise, as an enjoyer of Yoko Taro's work, Papa NieR doesn't make sense within the sphere of character's that Yoko Taro writes. He has shown to be very familiar with drawing young men/ boys, and this can be seen in all of his work, and Papa NieR is truthfully a standout among his roster. I make the comparison that Papa NieR is identical to/following the same tropes as Joel from The Last of Us 1, arguing that the the change from brother-sister to father-daughter must have been made to appeal to NA consumer's, because The Last of Us 1 is hailed as one of the greatest video games of all time, for being a game about a father trying to protect his (surrogate) daughter in a world where humanity is on the brink of extinction, heartlessly murdering a bunch of people in order to succeed in his goal, ultimately betraying the person he wanted to protect.

Ignoring the remaster for a moment, the only reason why you would play 'NIER' is because you don't have access to the original game, or because you get a kick out of the father-daughter dynamic more than the brother-sister dynamic. I understand why people would prefer it, in that sense, but I don't consider this version of NieR: RepliCant to be Yoko Taro's intended vision of the game he directed, and its writing is fundamentally weaker than RepliCant. Many little details are lost in this version of the game; they censored Emil being gay; they didn't change the writing enough to make him act like a 40 year old man. Yet the quality of Yoko Taro's writing persists, as many people still feel the heartfelt moments in the game, even with this seemingly jarring change of identity, many actually feeling more because like I mentioned above, they get a kick out of the father-daughter dynamic, as well as Papa NieR's acceptance of Emil's new identity.

I'm not going to be a chud about it and tell you to play the Japanese version, I'm just pointing out that this version of the game was made with the singular purpose of selling more copies of NieR, because they didn't believe the Brother-sister dynamic was going to sell to North American audiences. I've seen many people express apathy towards NieR: RepliCant because they played NIER on the Xbox 360 14 years ago, and I think they're worse off for it.

Dtown completed The Last of Us Part II: Remastered
OG: https://youtu.be/GS804Qha0Fs?t=24221

Remastered: https://youtu.be/kfhXgacx19M?t=11360

You'd think they'd fix the one thing that proved how contrived the whole experience fundamentally is, but they don't even bother.
