Got a Game Soundtrack? I'll Rate It!

ngl I wasn't going to get in on this trend at first, because I don't know how much insight I'll have compared to a lot of people on here, but the fun of seeing other people do it made me decide to throw my hat into the ring. Had first seen it due to Gyoza's list, but ofc a lot of people have them now!

It's pretty simple. Give me a game's OST, I'll listen to it and rank it. It doesn't have to be a game I've actually played, but it's slightly preferred.

I'm a bit more of a Pikmin 2 guy myself, but also Pikmin's soundtrack is truly a top tier one as well. The Final Trial has always stuck out to me as incredibly creepy, especially when combined with the level itself having only 1 enemy so a lot of it is solving a level-wide puzzle while anxiety mounts. "Uneasy" is the best word for that track. The soundtrack mostly consists of very "natural" feeling music which makes tracks like Level Select or Today's Results only stand out more: Olimar is a man in an unknown world, a spacefarer in post-apocalyptic nature racing against certain doom. I also love the soundtrack's progression: The Forest of Hope is a hopeful tune fitting to Olimar realizing that all is not lost to start with, while The Final Trial ends it with a profound sense of unease and uncertainty towards the end of Olimar's journey in an eerie level. It perhaps fits that Olimar is certain to escape if you get to The Final Trial, but not certain to get the best ending. Olimar is honestly one of Nintendo's best protagonists and a very interesting character and I think some parts of the soundtrack reflect that well. It's overall just plain amazing.

Standout Tracks:

- The Final Trial (Honestly, really fuckin' creepy? The uplifting horns contrasting the "off" sounding "ting ting ting" background sounds and the way the...instrumental chorus, I guess it'd be called?, goes kinda dramatic and nuts is good. Some of it feels like it is present in the Impact Site song, which ties the game together. It's one of the best final level themes around!)
- Title Screen (One of the iconic title screen tunes for me, it feels like it nails the entire "feel" of Pikmin in a single song.)
- Prologue (It's such a space-y tune tho! Why does the last 10 seconds go full dubstep? I don't know, but I like it!)
- Level Slect (Anyone wanna talk about the game's division between highly technological, space-based themes for everything involving / on Olimar's ship vs. the natural, sometimes wood-based instrumentals in the actual levels?)
- The Impact Site (Sorry to have so many standout tracks here but Pikmin 1 doesn't really miss)
- The Forest of Hope (This is perfect music for someone to use in the background of a Youtube video. The main melody reminds me of childhood bedtime music.)
- The Distant Spring (It just sounds so mystical and watery, I like how it amps up some of the danger and worry noises after the upbeat and hopeful Forest of Hope.)
- The Forst Navel (banjos)
- The Final Battle (Ganondorf and Dracula, is that you?)
- Night Comes (Not really a song but a jingle but it's still stuck in my head years later)
- Today's Results (It's so fuckin' relaxing tho)
- Creature Montage (The marching band-style upbeat music always felt discordant with the game's ending but in a way I rather enjoyed. A triumphant theme to montage what you survived in a barren world. Also the creature montage is the prelude to the Piklopedia, which is one of the best gaming features ever.)
- Live As a Pikmin (Imagine this is the last thing you hear before being turned into a Pikmin forever.)

There's apparently people who don't like the Insert Coin theme from this game and I disagree entirely because it is hilariously manic and high strung for inserting a coin. It's not like you listen to it loop 500 times on a level or anything. You know what, though? I think this soundtrack is lowkey underrated! It's no Yoshi's Island and they definitely overuse remixing some of the themes, but they also get experimental with some seriously upbeat tunes like Insert Coin, Poochy Pups and the boss transformation songs. It sounds like music you'd get for the childish, playful nature of the game, even a bit kindergarden-ish. I think part of the issue is a lot of the best songs are the shorter ones you won't be hearing as much while the level themes tend to be the more repetitive ones. On the other hand, Crafted World is very much an easy and chill game, so having music that's pleasant and blends in is also enjoyable I feel.

It does still get mind numbing if you listen to it in a row, though. Should have been more themes to cycle through for remixing.

Standout Tracks:

- Insert Coin
- Main Theme (It's cute and also every other song is a god damn variation on it)
- Poochy Pups/Flipping The Stage (It's a mix of shaking beads and like, industrial toy wrenches?? Cool???)
- Fortress (This isn't top tier over all games but it is still kind of a bop, Sand World reuses this and I don't know why)
- The Transformation Songs (All of them are similar so I'm lumping them together as fun little boss primers)
- Sand World (Hurry Up!) (This entire soundtrack is at its best when it gets fast-paced, ironic for a "Play and Chill" game)
- World Map Medley (This game does the Yoshi's Island theme of the level select music beginning minimalistic and expanding with each world, which I thought worked out well here as well as in Yoshi's Island)
- Haunted Maker Mansion / Nighttime Crafts (Off-brand Luigi's Mansion. Probably the best use of the leimotifing in the soundtrack?)

Not gonna lie despite playing this game a toooon as a kid, I don't remember the soundtrack much. Giving it further inspection it seems fitting to the naturalistic, light tunes you'd expect for a game like Pokemon Snap, but I can't say it really jumps out to me as impressive. Without knowing too much about music, I suppose it's the composition? It feels expected, basically. But it isn't bad, "merely" enjoyable.

Why does Valley have music from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly in it?

Standout Tracks:

- Gallery (The "UGH!" sounds like part of the DK Rap, I will be taking no further questions today)
- Camera Check (This is one of the songs I did remember)
- Tunnel (okay but this is super sick tho??)
- Volcano (Bouncy!)
- Cave (God this reminds me of another song but I don't know WHICH ONE)
- River (This is absolutely a Yoshi styled music track. Change my mind. The little wind "doot-doot-d o o t d o o t" is right in line with it.)
- Pokemon Flute
- Staff Roll 1 (The Rarest Pokémon) (yo mew you holdin' a fiesta or somethin the beat is movin')

LiveALive's soundtrack is a treat, and won't take up too much of your time. (For others reading, mind that there's a spoiler among the song titles to avoid, just as a heads-up on a game that's best played mostly blind.)
