It's trying, and it's trying some interesting things, but the result ends up a bit too esoteric and fractured to really work for me.

A stirring sci-fi story of injustice told in a novel format that casts the player in the very role they're already inhabiting: someone at a computer exploring the logs of a long-dead starship.

I need to replay it, as my first playthrough was while I was still steeped in a conservative religious worldview, and I expect the story of discrimination and gay rights would hit differently now.

Solid horror game, understandable inspiration for the trend of similar, non-combat-focused scary games. Showing its age a bit, but still inspired.

A really charming, sad retelling of a classic story in a novel VR format.

I made this one, so I'm not gonna review it. But I have indeed played it lol

A fun little educational game, great for kids learning math and grammar.

It's just... really bleak. And I know it doesn't get any brighter. I'm sure that's intentional, part of the point, but it didn't work for me.

2016

A beautiful, serene adventure. Overshadowed by its spiritual predecessor, Journey, but a worthwhile experience in its own right.

An interesting sci-fi visual novel with a really endearing robot character.

A world full of classically Souls-like challenges to explore, beautiful and strange vistas to take in, and fantasy stories to piece together. The best version of what an open-world Souls game could be.

Somehow managing to one-up Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom creates a living, breathing vision of a kingdom on the road to recovery. With countless interlocking quests, events, and side-stories involving countless named characters, this is the most compelling, tangible Hyrule we've ever gotten to enjoy.

Everything else is great too, as you'd expect, but this is what puts it above and beyond for me.

The gold standard for narrative adventure games, Tacoma's unique gameplay turns its story into a narrative puzzle. Add stellar character writing, fantastic vocal performances, and a healthy dose of anti-corporate sentiment, and you have an all-timer.

Solid but unremarkable game in many respects, but worth it for the gorgeous visuals and stirring character vignettes. Surprisingly difficult, more Soulslike in combat than you might expect.
