LudoNarraCon 2023 Demos

Checked out a few of the demos for LudoNarraCon, here are my thoughts on each

I was already interested in this game, it being sold as a sort of indie persona or similar. I didnt expect when playing it however, that it was seemingly most inspired by Persona1! The grid based -> plan your attack however many times as you want, then the plan executes itself in real time is cool.

There is the persona 3/4/5 calendar system with different afternoon, day and evening periods but they seemed quite token from the demo, which I suppose could be either a turn off or a selling point depending on your view of that gameplay system.
Rather enjoyed this, its a fixed camera scifi adventure game with light (platforming? technically shooting ig?) elements. You basically delve into memories in a sort of AI the Somnium Files setup and use the ability to move between timeperiods to interact with the levels and learn more about the story and characters. I look forward to its release.
Point and click game in the flash style, semi absurd. You travel between subway stations and time itself.
Very brief but intriguing. Appealing adult comic book artstyle and the musical bits seem pretty good. Itll be a question of whether or not the branching musical bits can really work in the scope of a full game but Im cautiously optimistic
Its a detective game set in a circus so if you're still traumatized by Turnabout Big Top this might not be for you. The art direction and character designs are good but Im not too much of a fan of the writing style, which for a VN seems like a pretty big problem. Could be good
You know its dire when you abandon a demo. The semi interesting premise of being in a desert island with a bunch of greek gods just isnt as interesting as youd think and when I was given my first task of feeding 16 seagulls I just went "fuck that" and quit. Okay that is maybe partly my fault but the concerta can only do so much when you fuck up your first impression this bad with poor pacing and running around talking to dull characters
Its an interesting idea, essentially a word based rpg/typing game. You unlock new words which make up your attacks which you must memorize. I think it might be bugged though cause you can guess the new skill at any time, but I had my witch with _ap just 3 words and I typed every single possible combination in the english language and nothing happened. Its worth a look, but personally I dont know if this idea will really hold the weight of a full length game
Interesting VN with a really pretty artstyle. Essentially its the Uchikoshi thing (or I guess YUNO thing technically) of making branching diegetic. You control Harmony, who can commune between a symbolic world filled with manifestations of human qualities and the real world - an alternate future mediterranean city state.

A lot of mechanics all related to flowchart navigation but wisely keeps the moment to moment gameplay confined to relatively small trees that lead into others, letting you take things one at a time more or less. Im looking forward to its release
Its a sort of cosmic horror furry gay(or I guess lesbian rather) dating sim/adventure game. If that sentence sounds interesting to you then you will likely enjoy this. Its not really my thing, but it seems well made. Thyme might enjoy this
Interesting farming sim with hand drawn artstyle set in rural india. If they iron out a few technical issues, its pretty compelling
The most technically ambitious out of the bunch, The Invincible is apparently inspired by the works of Stanislaw Lem of Solaris fame. Its your usual setup of being the suvivor of a doomed expedition to Mars with a broader mystery. The demo has some rather poor performance but as theyre quick to point out this isnt the final build so hopefully itll run smoothly on release
Its a punk rock rhythm game about a struggling demon girl in her 30s. Its not really my vibe but it feels like a cartoon MTV might have aired at some point. Seems like something EVX might enjoy
Okay I also didnt finish this one but at the risk of making everyone think I have no tolerance for a slower pace (I do, Spring Summer Autumn Winter and Spring again is one of my favourite movies. Wayward Strand is one of my favourite games) I just cannot be assed when the game seems to be composed of mostly empty space and then I get told to fetch someguy's bullshit before he'll do something for me and... no, Im not letting that bullshit slide anymore, stop having this type of filler.

Anyways the game is essentially just trying to be Night In The Woods pretty much in tone, structure, artstyle etc. And I didnt even like Night In The Woods but that at least had some idk suggestion that it would have some intrigue or levity or whatever. Might be good if you like that sort of thing IG
Its a fixed camera adventure game trying to throwback to the ps1 era, but with 2d backgrounds instead of pre rendered ones. It has horrendous camera work though, it zooms in at times in ways where I thought it might be bugged
Its a comedy management game about keeping a space program in good reputation. The art style and tone seems to evoke mid 20th century tv cartoons and the humour...well its not my thing personally but I could see someone else finding it funny. Its okay I guess, theres a lot of your usual keeping up of stats, random comedic events where you choose one of a few options which can lower your reputation overall or your relationship to one of 5 councillors who give bonuses to money and other things.

I got told I needed to get my astronauts to have 7 in one of three stats before a certain date so they could succeed, but when the time came they still failed, turns out 7 was just like, the bare minimum. You could have clarified game! So I got fired but the demo ended there anyways so whatever
A rather interesting premise for a pseudo dating sim. You are a census official in an alternate 1860s London which fell through the earth into a deep chasm (if only). You must obtain information for the census as all records were lost and get to the bottom of the ongoing intrigues with the sinister new government you work for, some possible lovecraftian cultists and your general circle of friends, and presumably get them to kiss you at some point.

Asking questions to obtain personal information is a nice excuse for why people arent super put off by the dating sim stuff, though of course they can still be upset and you can look like a fool if you say the wrong thing to the wrong person. Im not super interested, but its well made and seems worth a try when its out if this has peeked your curiosity
Its a horror adventure fixed camera with paper aesthetic set in malaysia. What is it with all the fixed camera stuff lately? Im cool with it in theory but here a lot of the camera transitions are a bit rough and disorienting. And yeah ok I get that in horror that can enhance the feeling of dread but here it was just giving me mild motion sickness, which I don't think was the intention. It looks intriguing at least, if youre interested in coming of age stories with ghosts in them
Way too long for a demo. Its a VN thats trying to look like its filmed on a shitty video camera, the artstyle is pretty interesting even if Im not the biggest fan personally. Its a mystery story set in a "ghost" world. Idk man Im regretting playing so many goddamned demos Im starting to get sick of em
Its a furry(or scaley or whatever its animals from the mezozoic era) coming of age rhythm adventure game. Its not really my thing but the art direction is good
