Halo Infinite is a good stepping stone for the franchise into maybe going open world. The open world does feel very empty(?). They were smart to have the beginning have the best open world part, then it starts getting more and more linear, until it just locks you into the campaign. Saying that, the open world is fun because the gameplay is REALLY fun. I can say that I probably prefer the movie-esque galaxy trotting campaigns for the breadth of different visuals and the epicness of the stories, but this open world does just provide you with something that those wouldn't, the freedom to engage with situations from any angle. The open world does hinder story idea since you have to stay in a singular place, thats my big hang up with doing open world again, maybe they should try to make specific levels that are just a semi-large sandbox instead (or even what Witcher 3 did).

The gameplay is some of the funnest the series has had. The grapple hook leads to fast fights where you can just melee everyone to death, or escape tight situations. Adding momentum based speed to Halo is very fun. The drop shield is also fun for "shit i need cover NOW" situations.

The story enacts on my favourite part of Halo, the Chief and Cortana, its just a shame its off the back of Halo 5. They did the best they could trying to band-aid Halo 5's story and consequences. There is a lot of stuff left over from Halo 5 that I kind of just have to go "yup, that happened, I just have to accept that for this story to continue." A lot of stuff kind of feels just hand waved; "what did Cortana really want to do with the big death machines?," "what are the specifics with the UNSC just turning tail and hiding?," "did the Banished beat up Cortana's death machines?," and im kind of glad is was just swept under the carpet (maybe deal with it more in the next campaign).

I very much enjoy the characters in this game. Weapon is a nice contrast to Chief's no-nonsense duty, and to Cortana's sarcasm. She is just a happy little person and that makes me happy :). Echo 216 is another good contrast to Chief, like what person of that rank has talked to the Chief like how he does. He is scared and wants to go home. That cutscene where chief kneels next to him after 216's spiel, it was beautiful. The cutscene with Weapon's plot twist was another beautiful moment. I will say again I love love love the relationship with Chief and his AI, it is the Heart of this series.

In closing, this game NAILED it with the gameplay, the open world feels very demo-y and not fully realized, and the story does it best to band-aid Halo 5 while delivering some of the best Chief character moments.
