GOTY 2023

Ranked list of my top games that released in 2023 (that I played; I didn't play very many). I haven't hit credits on TOTK or BG3 but put 100 hours in each of them so I'm counting them.

Pikmin 4
Pikmin 4
My first Pikmin game but will not be my last!!! Got the game of the year #1 spot because unlike ToTK and BG3, there's no weird fantasy racism. Also neither of those has little plant guys that sing as they haul oranges. So. There's a clear winner here.

Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur's Gate 3
Blown away by this game. It's only held back by some rough encounter design in act 3, and the fantasy racism endemic to DND 5e. Absolute banger of a game that I will be returning to!

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
I LOVE TotK. I am also pretty critical of the way the storytelling in Zelda's storyline happened. It felt both arabphobic and boring as hell. Everything else was a 10/10.

3

In Stars and Time
In Stars and Time
A pretty polarizing game. By committing to the tedium of time loops, it can be a little tedious. But as a depressed, traumatized gay person, I felt so so seen by this game. Can't wait to see what the devs make next!

4

Octopath Traveler II
Octopath Traveler II
I'm still playing this and on the travelers' chapter twos, but I am absolutely blown away by this game. The presentation and gameplay are polished and charming, and the writing is leaps and bounds better than OT1 (in my opinion).

5

Misericorde: Volume One
Misericorde: Volume One
Losing my mind, can't wait for volume 2. In a year where I played too many games that were pretty sexist, it ruled to play this feminist vn.
