almost incomprehensibly boring, i'm almost impressed actually.
i usually have more patience for these kind of games when at least they have either an interesting story, characters, premise, themes, anything i cant latch on to, but this one has nothing.
ok, big bang made everything, i can get that from any basic science schoolbook. sure, you can try to make it look interesting, which this game kinda did, but the gameplay is so not there that it could have just been an animation.

i don't really know how to start a review for this game. i think it would be as bloated as the game is. or maybe i should not start one, because i don't think the game is actually finished as is
but all of that being said, i figure plenty of people have already talked about how buggy and broken it is (sometimes in a fun way, sometimes not) but i feel what really irked me was the story, the characterization, things that really can't be patched out. i like 40k, not too invested in it, but i like the lore, i love reading articles or listening to podcasts about it, but i could not muster any interesting in the thousands and thousands of words being written here. everything felt flat, uninteresting, i just skipped everything. could not care less about the koronus expanse and everyone living it. i would just skip everything till the next slaughterfest of a battle, level up my dudes and change equipment
i liked a lot of it, but damn, there's a lot to not like it too

i don't think i ever had this experience where a game i was loving so much, soured so spectacularly. the first few hours of it, i was ready to give it 5 stars, gushing with praises about the impact of weapons, the shotgun specifically that melts people at close range and evaporates heads while a brain flies of to some random place in the room, the perfect emulation of john wick and how sliding into a group of enemies is like a strike in bowling.
and then the problems started. sure, as a fear spiritual successor i was expecting horror, and so the goop zombies although not great enemies felt ok, and the mothman was kinda even cool, but the level design started to become boring.
and then it nosedives, with a jumpscare i actually groaned at it. a forced stealth segment with the dumbest most youtuber spooking ass monster you ever saw. and then, why not? the backrooms. not inspired or anything, the actual backroom, just because it automatically makes the game scary i guess? even though it makes no sense?
this soon is followed my a succession of awful bosses, weird story, dialogue and NPCs and the dumbest and most predictable betrayal ever written in video games. and in this torrent of bad stuff, the mediocre edges start to surface. the repetitiveness of the combat, the emptiness of the hub in-between missions, the lack of any uniqueness and originality in the design of characters, levels and even the world.
i am actually annoyed not just at the game itself, but at how much it goes downhill after a few short levels. started with a strong 5 and ended with a 1, so i guess a 3 is fair score overall.

loved it, juggling multiple languages, translations and meanings is great.
the game perfectly imprints on you the mind and methodology of both an archeologist and a logician, with hour of you shuffling between pages and different languages to try to understand what you are seeing and hearing. there's a lot of subjectivity, but that is part of the fun, and the notebook does give you leeway, accepting answers when they're close enough.
the only reason i give it 4 stars is because of the stealth sections. i love stealth, even when they're in games that are not about stealth, but it just doesn't work here, both in terms of mechanics and vibes.

very cute, the drawings are charming and the humor mostly hits. the "timed" structured can be a bit annoying though, it's specially annoying when you decide to visit a place, there's nothing/nobody there and then a whole day passes, or when you miss a very important proof because of bad timing
i understand the time mechanic can lead to a lot of frustration, it frustrated me, but the game does deal with your failures, and it's not just an automatic game over. i think if it's worked on with a bit more time and budget it's a template for a very yood system, and something ace attorney could even implement to combat the staleness i feel the franchise is going through

The atmosphere here is top notch, just the greatest hits of space horror, event horizon, alien, etc.
But i got a bit annoyed at the puzzles. A good part of it i can blame it on me, sure, but pixelhunting in an incredibly dark area it's not engaging, a highlight all button would impact less immersion than the frustration of shaking your icon everywhere.
But honestly, it's just a minor pet peeve, and it's absolutely worth playing, it's a nightmare to look at, but in a good way.
