"Kirby huh? Heh, I'm starting to see the appeal."

As a newcomer, it's a pretty great introduction to many aspects of the series, I can see why people always say to start with this one.
I'd give it a 4, but I disliked how much bosses were reused across the subgames (which I hear is a trend throughout the whole series), and then Meta Knightmare Ultra is just short versions of all the Kirby campaigns but you can only use sword, the very few new abilities Meta has aren't much, they pretty much just serve to skip the annoying bosses (which you also repeat in this campaign) or to heal, which kinda makes the candies worthless, especially since the cave and milky way wishes levels replace all the treasures and abilities Kirby had with just candy and lives so you just kinda speedrun those big ass levels beacause the secrets aren't any good. Almost nothing is contextualized in that mode either, despite having cutscenes.
Meta just destroys his own ship for no reason and they didn't even put a Kirby boss there, Galacta Knight was cool I guess.
I also disliked how easy it is to take contact damage from doing a dash attack on bosses, maybe have the attack push them or something? Also why do I take contact damage from the sub-bosses after beating them??? I'm just trying to finish them off or swallow them and even then you can lose health!

Still, great game. I'll try to beat the first arena at least and then play the Dreamland games after some time, these games seem to be too similar to play all close to each other.

Technically the most badass minigame collection ever

this game introducing a brand new boss phase at the very end of helper to hero when i had two pixels of health left was the most evil thing a game has done to me yet.

Marx Soul was the equivalent of Isshin the Sword Saint for 10 year old me.

I played this game all the time as a kid but decided to go back and 100% it last year. Almost definitely biased but it will always be the definitive Kirby game for me.

My first time playing kirby, I wanted to play this first so I can understand what this series is all about before diving into Forgotten Lands. It's a fun little game where you play a small set of games. Nothing crazy honestly, while it can be fun sometimes, it can get really repetitive and boring. Nothing else to say really. Kirby is such a cute little puffball

but meta knight that's your ship

It's almost insane how hard they nailed almost every aspect of this game. Kirby Super Star Ultra introduced the backbone of every modern Kirby game, you know how these games go. You have your silly little extra minigames, a boss rush, and of course a main story mode (or multiple story modes in this games case) and a mode where you speedrun through all the main level themes as a guy who is most likely not Kirby.

The way Super Star differs from the modern Kirby game is the fact that instead of just having one main story mode there's around 4 different campaigns for you to enjoy. We have a remake Kirby's Dreamland, Great Cave Offensive which is Kirby's first stab at a metroidvania, Milky Way Wishes which has you unlocking all your copy abilities by finding them in levels for you to be able to pick any copy ability at anytime, you can also pick any stage you want to play first in Milky Way which adds some spice to a replay, and of course there's Dynoblade. Just a somewhat normal kirby romp where he beats the shit out of a giant bird mom at the end. Oh I also forgot about Revenge of Metaknight which is much more storybased than the other gamemodes. And to top it all off after you finish up the main gamemodes Ultra adds 2 more extra game modes to end each playthrough with a bang.

I feel like gushing about how cool Revenge of the King and Revenge of Metaknight is. Kirby storytelling here is at its peak in my opinion. There’s no reading boss descriptions (which is cool I admit) or Miiverse posts to piece together what’s happening here, here the characters narrate over your gameplay and react to what you’re actually doing in game. You get to see the Halberd’s crew freak out over the fact Kirby (who is just a little man mind you) is dismantling and attacking the ship at it’s seams, or see King Dedede get more and more desperate as Kirby invades his castle. It’s a nice way to keep the player engaged in what’s going on with the plot while also keeping the pacing of the gameplay going. Also the duels with Dedede and Meta Knight at the end of both of their respective campaigns is peak Kirby.

Onto Great Cave Offensive, basically Kirby falls into a treasure filled mine and it’s up to you to escape, and hopefully snag every goody you see along the way. It’s just a fun little collectaton/metroidvania type thing filled with numerous fun references to other Nintendo franchises which I don’t see how anyone can say no to, I mean hey Kirby somehow picks up Falchion and Mr.Saturn, that’s pretty cool! Not much to say about it really, it’s just cool seeing money go up and getting shiny collectibles.

Finally I gotta talk about Milky Way Wishes. Marx is an absolutely little silly little guy, and easily one of the best Kirby antagonists and personally is the true start of Kirby fighting lovecraftian demons. Tackling levels out of order is a blast, especially since it also affects the order of copy abilities you can obtain, and therefore how you tackle enemies and bosses. Copy abilities in this game are sick, for Kirby’s first shot at giving every copy a unique moveset they completely knocked every copy ability out of the park. All of them are a blast to use. They should bring back the gimmick of unlocking copy abilities by finding them and then being able to pick whichever one you need at a given moment, but I’m not exactly left disappointed with how Milky Way execute the concept as this mode is still a complete blast even to this day.

I think that wraps up my thoughts on this game. I’ve 100%’d twice and it’s definitely a standout Kirby title next to Planet Robobot and the like. As always the bosses are bangers and the music even more so. Play this game sometime you won’t regret it!

Super Star Ultra is what many people consider to be the best Kirby game, and while this is only the second Kirby game I've played, I can see why. The levels are great and contain lots of secrets to find, making exploring each part of a level extremely rewarding. I also loved how instead of having one big adventure, there's just many smaller modes. Each of these have their own levels and unique gimmicks that add lots of gameplay variety, which helped keep me interested.

However, my biggest issue with this game is the bosses. The boss fights themselves are fine, but they are repeated so often throughout the different modes that they became rather tiring to fight. This is especially true for the arenas, which are just a boss rush modes. These are extremely tedious, resulting in me giving up on completing the true arena. I wanted to complete it due to there being new boss fights at the end, but I couldn't get myself to go through the slog of successfully defeating the bosses I have already fought a plethora of times before.

While I had problems with the repeated bosses, the main levels were great and fun to go through, so I still had an enjoyable time with the game.

Insert unfunny joke about how Kirby is a Fire Emblem lord here

My first and my #1 Kirby game. An awesome remake of an already great game means you're getting one of the best games ever made. Played this on release and been playing it since.

Kirby Super Star Ultra is everything. It took an already really great game and made it even better. Yeah ofc the new game modes are bangers (Revenge Of The King my beloved) but one minor thing about this game that rarely ever gets brought up is the physics being changed. The controls were made to be less stiff in this remake and that honestly makes all the difference.

That's it. That's the entire review. This is one of the first Kirby games I can comfortably put in the "peak fiction" category but it definitely won't be the last

Been playing through the kirby games in release order (this is substituting original super star) and this is the one ive enjoyed the most
the sprite work is awesome, i love this artstyle. This is the best soundtrack so far too. No big complaints, it’s enjoyable throughout.

I love this game. I remember where I bought most of my games from my adolescence, however I don't remember buying this game nor receiving it as a gift. It appeared in my life bringing my more joy than maybe any other DS game I owned. It's like a book of short stories, except it's a video game. It's like the best of Borges, Le Guin, and Bradbury short storied combined into a cute little pink guy game. Thank you Kirby.

Pretty fun game, each sub game kept things fresh.

A content-rich, incredibly enjoyable platformer. I've always viewed Kirby games as having beat-em-up elements with how powerful you are in comparison to everything else, and compared to the other Kirby games at the time that were still running off of the 1 button Kirby's Adventure formula for abilities, having the Super Star ability controls - and having them succeed in this game so well they would become the standard going forward - just feels great to play. Kirby games aren't known for difficulty, which is why the addition of Revenge of the King and more make up for it by being considerably more difficult extras that are fun to tear through. The sprites are incredibly clean in this game and have been used in sprite comics across the globe. The new content added in this remake feels so natural that when I was younger playing it, I didn't think anything odd of it appearing. The first appearances of the True Arena and Masked Dedede are as good as any of their reappearances, and the old content that was remade is as great as it was on the SNES. I'd call this game a perfect remake - all others should strive to be like this.

Really great game. A culmination of every game that's come before it, resulting in one of the best Kirby games ever. Gameplay is incredibly smooth (though I still slightly prefer the movement of the Flagship games), the abilities are expanded and have a lot more to them, the collections of games are all fun with unique gimmicks to keep them interesting, the bosses are good and have some of the best in the series, and overall the game just has so much charm to it.

I can truly appreciate this game for all it's done and how much it's influenced the Kirby series; and I mean both the original Super Star and the additions in Ultra. The expanded abilities, the Halberd, Marx, Novas, and much more all came from the original, while Masked Dedede, Galacta Knight, The TRUE Arena (and the general difficulty of the mode), and the Soul bosses (Canvas Curse did do a soul boss first, but this was the first game to put in in a mainline game and make it more "final boss but harder and with more moves" rather than "completely original sentient ball fight", though the latter would continue to return in later games) all came from Ultra.

Also final note, this is the first Kirby game in the series where I truly went out of my way to get 100%. I had fun the entire time, and beating Marx Soul for the first time was incredibly satisfying. Also, shout out to Blade Knight for sticking with me all the way through Meta Knightmare Ultra without leaving me once. You deserve more attention.

Overall, this game is really good. Even if you're not a Kirby fan, this game is very much worth checking out.

I still think that Milky Way Wishes is the most fun version of the Kirby formula so far. One of the best Kirby games.

This has got to be one of the best Kirby games I've ever played. The visuals, music, gameplay, and everything else are so good!! You gotta love this pink puff ball!

Jogo divertidissimo, exemplo de remake, não só melhoria gráfica, muita coisa foi aprimorada, superou muito o original. Meu Kirby favorito.

Meta knight's revenge and Revenge of the king are peak gaming and nothing has ever reached to its level since tbh.

Its good at being a kirby game.

I kind of prefer Super Star over this, just because Kirby feels floatier than usual here, but it's still a really good game with a bunch of stuff to do.
