[Quick review for early access launch version]

Though it's too early to pass judgement on Slime Rancher 2 as a complete experience, the launch of the game offers players a pretty solid idea of expectations going forward. We have the heart and soul of Slime Rancher 2 in front of us, and eight hours of gameplay later, despite being pretty much what I expected, I can't help but feel a bit underwhelmed.

The core gameplay of the first Slime Rancher hasn't been tampered with much—feed slimes to get plorts, sell plorts to get money, use money to expand the farm. You also make hybrid slimes to save on space, and explore the world by platforming to areas possibly intended for later in the game (something I genuinely love about the first game). There aren't any big new mechanics, but a few things have been expanded upon or streamlined. For example, upgrades now also cost plorts and resources on top of money, a wise decision that keeps players from gathering upgrades too fast. Players no longer have to place resource extractors down—they're harvested from specific locations once a certain vac upgrade is acquired. There are also a few more slimes and foods now, with more to come, though that's fully expected. I very much appreciate the presence of bat slimes.

Now, these updates to the game are all fine and dandy, but none of them feel particularly substantial. Nothing here screams "Slime Rancher 2!" so much as they do "Slime Rancher 1.5!" Instead of getting the impression that this is a grand new adventure, I'm left feeling like I'm playing the first game but with a big graphical overhaul. The visuals are nice, and I'm especially fond of the new art direction, but I feel like it was given special priority over updates to the core gameplay experience. Slime Rancher 2 plays it very, very safe. The benefit to this is that Slime Rancher 1 is a very, very good game—so on its own, Slime Rancher 2 has the beginnings of one as well. But when I played Slime Rancher 1—even in its early access state—everything was new, and everything was a surprise. Slime Rancher 2, with its copied homework, has yet to offer that.

There are a lot of improvements over the original game here. At the same time there is a HUGE downgrade in the "Rancher" part of the game. In that it is now completely unnecessary to do... In the previous game, there was a need to have a huge amount of money to unlock stuff, which gave ranching a purpose. That's just.. not here. So the game feels more like just wandering around unlocking parts of the world and looking at the pretty slimes and graphics.

Still a great game, but it just doesn't have what made the first game so special to me... maybe when the game is fully released they will address that issue.

shocking absolutely no one, momoni park released a good game

i was so excited for this!!

but its kinda just
ehhhhhhhhh

its more of the same, which is both a good thing (the original was great and super fun!) and a bad thing (this game doesn't offer anything truly new)

It’s a bit rough around the edges still but it’s also still in early access so hopefully it’ll improve

Content not fleshed out enough yet but will probably be better than first once we get a few updates. Gorgeous game though

3/5 for the first few hours 1/5 the rest

Reskin of the first part with weak visual, and exactly the same gameplay, mechanics, buildings, I even specifically download the first part and checked, yes, at night, thanks to modern lighting, you can catch a couple of good shots, rgb-pens look beautiful, but not a masterpiece, the interface has become more "budget", the animations are better, but why should I play this when there is the first, more colorful part? I don’t like the visual of this part at all, they didn’t add any plot here, the islands are not some unusual locations, but if you mastered the original game, you like the picture and you are ready to farm the same thing again, and maybe again in future, because this is an early version, saves can break - then - go, Slime Rancher HD is at your service. I also doubt that it is worth waiting for the full version, because if they planned some kind of global changes, well, at least they would have added something at the start.
For those who have not played at all, the essence of the game - slimes jumping and plants grow on the island, we can transfer this and that to our base with a vacuum cleaner, and upgrades things to automatically suck poop from slimes that we can sell, cooler slimes eat rarer food, they are more difficult to keep, and give more expensive poop - "plorts". All upgrades do better reliability, automation, farming speed, and your stamina - that's it, it's the whole game, farming for even more farming, building some kind of shelter, or advancing the story, like in other games - no, there is no such thing, and, apparently it won’t, I always, even in the most interesting survival games, think that something is missing, and here even more, gameplay for the sake of gameplay.

It's Slime Rancher, who doesn't love that? But it's so early access, it's missing almost everything from the first game. Most of the slimes are the same from the first game, with just a few new ones. There's (currently) no missions for other characters, extra areas for characters, drones, two-way teleporters or anything else like that. I finished the game very quickly, so I'm just waiting around for more content. Otherwise, who doesn't love Slime Rancher? It's great otherwise.

Funciona. Entretiene.

Esperemos a ver como termina esto.

none of you will ever play kino like this even if it spits right at you

SLIME RANCHER 2 SLIME RANCHER 2 SLIME RANCHER 2 SLIME RANCHER 2 SLIME RANCHER 2

its slime rancher but...2!!! what more could you want?

A pretty neat little game that totally sapped my time over the course of the two days I played it but also didn't really give me a reason to continue past a certain point - admittedly this is likely because it's still in Early Access and isn't necessarily finished yet, but with about 10-12 hours of playtime I kinda feel like I've seen it all even though there's more to be added? Perhaps I'm being presumptuous but I feel like, I've seen the core gameplay loop - I know what the game's gonna have me doing and while it's fun and I enjoy it, that's just as far as the game goes.

Very few farming/management SIMs manage to hold my attention for this reason - and while I think their repetition and routine is part of their appeal, a "forever game" just isn't my kinda thing. Stardew Valley is the best game of this type that I've seen at mixing things up and changing the pace every so often and even that couldn't keep me hooked so I don't fault Slime Rancher for eventually growing a bit stale - I just think it did so perhaps a bit fast. I understand why devs do Early Access, but feel it's not a great fit for a game like this.

This being said, it's fun! It's charming, I like the slimes a lot, being able to effectively combine them through plorts and all the mechanics with corralling and feeding are really cool! You do get the same kinda dopamine-inducing "I am managing things :)" sensation that like, Zoo Tycoon or Animal Crossing gives you. TAR slimes as an enemy get really tiring after a while, especially considering that the game's soundtrack is very barebones and so you have this one same piano crawl playing every single time they appear - which is a lot! And I think the game, considering how cute and charming its premise is - does lack a bit in the personality department? The slimes are really the only thing that keep this game feeling different from most other management games imo. It's not my kinda thing in the long run, but I do appreciate it! There's a lot of potential here and if you've got some time to waste and just wanna chill out and earn some easy dopamine, I'd recommend this.

(I'd recommend it even more when it's actually finished tho)

Worse then the first due to lack of content

It sure is the second slime rancher game.
Feels the exact same as the first just with badass anglerfish slime. Also I get that the game is unfinished but why does it feel just as incomplete or without a goal like the first.

Give it some time; it'll be the definitive Slime Rancher experience.

I downloaded this game, started a new game, blinked, and it was already night.

Needs more content tho.

would be better than the first except its lacking a lot of content. i know the first did the same thing, but it still sucks that i kinda completed everything and now have nothing to do but wait

the fact this is just so peak and they're hardly done...

I think this is way too early access. I mean it doesn't even feel new. I didn't experience it enough to say that there is nothing new but it felt like that. Also the fact that there is still no complete automation is sad

As it is right now, this Early Access version is a very promising playable teaser for the game Slime Rancher 2 is gonna become someday. Unfortunately that also means that right now it's little more than a big patch for the first game. 2 boasts some pretty new graphics, a new map and some fun new slimes to play with but it's otherwise very much lacking an identity that separates it from it's predecessor. The gameplay loop is the exact same: go out, find slimes, bring them home, feed them so they make plorts you can sell, go back out, sometimes feed the giant ones so they open up new areas for you, rinse and repeat. The whole time I was playing through I was feeling serious deja vu, and I hope that once the game is finished it becomes a little more than "Slime Rancher, but again!"

Please add a compass and waypoint tokens we can place on the map

Slime Rancher 2 felt like an immediate step backwards and the more I played the more this occurred to me.

I've been struggling to understand why, but I found myself very frequently lost and oftentimes bored when traversing the maps in this game compared to the original despite them being horizontally bigger. I think the map geometry in the first game was more interesting despite thematically being a bit more more generic.

In Slime Rancher 1 in most of the areas there were a fairly wide variety of slimes available, mostly dominated by a few dominant common ones and then rarely some others, which felt like a completely reasonable ratio. Within a large amount of Slime Rancher 2's regions I found that there was significantly less variety which also led to me having a lot less variety of slimes for the first hour of gameplay whereas in the original I definitely had way more slimes and was keeping them in cooler environments.

I found it especially bizarre that I kept getting the feeling that it'd be too risky to go too far into any unexplored territory because I'd get lost and struggle to find my way back in time to feed my slimes and they'd break out. This left me feeling forced into a gameplay loop where I was keeping up with the food for all of my slimes as much as I could and only then going out to travel, for very brief periods of time. I found parallels to the issues I encountered playing Stardew Valley with the game's energy system and day cycles, where I'd be almost done with something and then having to stressfully run back to make sure nothing bad happens.

During a number of sessions playing this game I found myself so much more bored of the grind than I was with the first game too, I think the layout of the ranch and maybe just the way some numbers are tweaked compared to the original game is why I'm finding difficulty there.

Overall I can't recommend this sequel in its current early access state unless these issues are addressed personally. I'd suggest picking up the first game if anything I've mentioned turned you off of this one and you're still interested.

even better but sadly unfinished
