Honestly, I'm not sure if this game is worth 3.5 but this was my favorite game on GBA as a kid and I can't rate it lower. While the game is still beautiful and the combat (kinda) fun, the story is really MEH, and the game relies too much on artillery. The missions made me bored sometimes, however, the last one is great and I hope the next opus is going to features more of this type, or at least more challenges!
Played the GBA version on R36S.

i really dont like how the gameplay revolves around manipulating the enemy ai. winning always feels like cheating, in a way. im just not a fan of the defensive kinds of tactical games where you slowly creep forward until you make the enemy engage you. you can be heavily punished for a minor mistake, and when you play carefully enough to avoid them it just makes the enemies seem stupid. and the fog of war levels are just bad
This is the perfect game to play on the go, because you can save anytime you want, the maps are easy to read and the plot don't usually interrupt the gameplay, also the level design has enough diversity to make it a consistent joy. Sadly, the history is quite generic and a bit confusing if you don't follow the path the game intended for you to take. I never expected a complex social/economic comment, but I mean, the objective of the villain is to conquer the world, you can't get much lower than that.
Advance Wars: Dual Strike is a game I played for hundreds of hours as a kid, and it's one of my favorite games ever, but I never went back to play the first two games on GBA until now. The original Advance Wars is a little too easy on certain missions, the AI can be reckless and give you easy trades, the story is quite basic, and it lacks some balancing or QOL changes that I miss from DS, but it still has the charm that made me love Advance Wars DS so much. As a final note, what a huge glow-up Kanbei had lol, on DS he is a serious and menacing badass while here he's just a caricature of a dumb but likable general/dad.
Very fun and dripping with charm. Something about seeing those little tanks sliding around and blasting each other... And let's not forget indirect weaponry, my beloved. There's actually a surprising amount of replayability and content in this game if you enjoy the gameplay loop. The campaign plot is a bit too silly for me, but the characters are fun. I'm excited to play the sequel soon.
Advance Wars is a treat to play. Admittedly it does take a while until you feel like you have a full implicit understanding of how to play the game "properly". I'd say it all seemed to click when I reached the end of the credits which makes me want to continue with the post-game content. You constantly feel like you're getting better and learning which is what makes this game enjoyable. If you were hoping for any kind of interesting story besides evil people are evil and you're the good guy then you should probably stay away from this one. I don't think it matters too much though because the gameplay is tight and it's the perfect introduction to tactical RPG mechanics. I legit want to keep playing this and maybe finally try Fire Emblem again.
