this is will always be where 2d fighting games peaked for me. the stages, characters, & the endings accompanied by the warm ethereal blanket that is the credit roll, lives in my head so effortlessly rent free. the style itself left a ginormous impact on my taste & the combat is crack ofc. also vanilla vs being 2 points above this is will never not be insane.

Arcade-perfect Perfection. Probably. I'm assuming that this is the best one for like the competitive players and all that but honestly most of my enjoyment came from the sheer absurdity of the game. Like, there's this intense music playing while a demon or something gets his ass beat by little red riding hood with grenades. On a train that has a mouth. Oh, of course the train is piloted by a skeleton. Truly every frame is a painting. Is it supposed to be this funny or am I an asshole? It's all pure fun, and cooler than Street Fighter could ever be.
In a perfect world Darkstalkers would be able to continue with a new game with HD sprites or perhaps the Arcsys method of psuedo-2D modeling.
But in today's environment I think I'm okay with Darkstalkers never returning and leaving it to exist only in crossovers. I just can't see Capcom's current modelers ever doing justice to these character designs or their animations. It sucks, but it is what it is.

The saturn port of this is the best because it pretty much has everyone from the other darkstalkers games in it iirc. Game is a turbo banger, the characters are all so fun and memorable, the game is fast and frantic to play, it doesn't take itself seriously but can still be played seriously, it's just a damn good ass time. The fact that capcom just dropped the series like a rock after this game could probably be seen as a war crime or something
I love this game so much. It’s straight up my favorite fighting game (besides brawl) and like a top 3 Capcom game. (Right next to Dead Rising and RE4 for me)
First off my big takeaway is the roster. I love all the characters. Not only for the horror influence but for their brilliant character designs and their personalities. It’s all great stuff and the sprite work and animation is just top tier. I love how diverse everyone is too in terms of their backstories and personalities . It’s all great stuff and it shows the game can be both serious, cute or creepy whenever it wants to be.
Combat is excellent too.
I love my fighters to be fast paced and kinetic while offering fun over the top special moves. This game definitely offers on that and it’s super fun. My favorites to play as are B.B Hood, Q-Bee, Heisen Ko and Lilith. I always liked characters who use weapons like guns or explosives so B.B Hood grew on me quick and she’s probably my main. Lilith from what I can tell is basically just a faster version of Morrigan so she’s a lot of fun for combos. Q-Bee is sort of similar to Chun Li who is my favorite street fighter character. Heisen Ko Is really cool and one of my favorites although I’m not the best with her, the way she turns her arms into various different weapons is cool tho. I’m by no means a competitive player but the game is fun enough to get me to not only learn the basics but to keep me playing for a while which is nice.
For me my liking for a fighter is how much I like the roster and how much I like to play it. I personally don’t care much for competitive stuff even if I respect it and find the history fascinating. Playing fighters competitively aren’t really my thing tho. If a fighter can be fast paced and offer a cool roster then I’m cool with it. Which this game absolutely succeeds with.
Finally the music goes hard. I like just about every track here and there produced quite well. Going for a more electronic dance sound while also fitting a fighting game.
If you’re a producer look into sampling this.
Solid 4.5/5 if this had stronger single player content outside of arcade mode this would likely be a 5 lol.
Also Lilith 😳. Game got crazy bitches.
Edit: 1/2/23
I know I said 4.5 but I’ll put it among my favorites as a 5. Will it go back down? Idk lol

Maybe The Silver Case was just Morrigan's sprite all along...
