For the time? This was KINO.
Nowadays? Eh, I'd rather play Diablo 2.

Game has incredible atmosphere. Trendsetter.

Great classic and the foundation of the series.

It took me a very long time to finally complete this gem, but one night, it just had to be done. The classic Diablo is the embodiment of nostalgia and one cannot deny that it can be labeled as one of the greatest foundations of video game history.

That being said, I will focus on the game from the perspective of the time it was released and how it holds up today.

Story wise, Diablo is full of lore and sequel material. Something the developers did very well. It made a solid foundation to create more games, what, of course, happened.

You play as a hero returning to her/his hometown and finding that strange things are happening. The dead rise from their graves/tombs and a unknown evil has taken over the land. You investigate the cathedral, where it all starts and dig deeper into the labyrinth, eventually ending up in hell itself.

Through the story, you learn that all the events and evil can be traced back to the demon lord Diablo. By speaking to Deckard Cain, you learn the gruesome history of his origin and backstory and he must be stopped at all cost. Deckard Cain is not your stereotypical wise man, but actually a Horadrim, a member of an ancient order that always fought against the forces of hell.

Gameplay wise, Diablo is easy to understand and plays smoothly. You pickup weapons, armor, and spells to improve your character, level up to increase your stats and become stronger. You just kill stuff for experience and jug health potions like they were cold beers.

The variation in enemies and environments is nicely done. Every four floors, the setting changes and become darker and more vile. You really get the feeling that you are progressing towards something really disturbing and evil.

The graphics are amazing for its time and, even today, I had no problem looking at the “aged sprites”. Animations are smooth and the enemy designs are very cool. In a time like today, it is hard to imagen that you encounter some sexy succubae with massive juggies that shoot flaming stars at you. As a kid, this would be something else. The piles of gore and blood when you slay the spawns of hell are epic and give a nice stimulating presentation of your hard work.

In the sound department, I still think Diablo is one of the greatest I have ever experienced. The sound of hitting enemies, the grunts and screams, the sound of casting spells and the dreadful music is a piece of art. Everything feels violent and disturbing when it comes to the sound.

There are some small issues in Diablo, like the snail pace movement speed. Moving around town and in the dungeons feels so incredibly slow that my skin crawled in pure agony sometimes. An other small annoyance is that you can get very rich, very fast by selling unique and rare items. This does not sound like a problem, but every five thousand gold takes up a square in your small inventory. So when you sell an epic chest armor that you don’t need for two hundred thousand gold, your inventory is full.

The biggest irony in Diablo, is that the game has a reputation for being relentlessly hard, which is true, but only when you reach the Butcher. If you kill him (by luck, prayer and running), the game turns around and is actually really, really easy. This is mainly because of the unique items you receive from the four main bosses in the game. With those items alone, you are so powerful that the game becomes laughable, especially when you kill the big man himself. Sure, there are still some areas in which enemies bombard you with a million projectiles at the same time, but with some strategy, you can outsmart them by luring small groups at you at a time.

The Butcher is the ultimate beginners trap and, by far, the hardest boss in the game. Mainly because of his “animation stun lock”, in which you cannot move and have to endure hit after hit after hit (which does not end well after hit number 4). After that, it is smooth sailing. The realization that this asshole was the whole reason that I never finished this game before is stunning and funny. I just wished Diablo himself was somewhat more of a challenge. I just put on the unique, and unmissable, Constriction Ring which grants max resistance to fire (while slowly losing health) and blasted him away in seconds.

I would definitely recommend Diablo, even to this day. It is an experience that you must have completed at least once in my honest opinion.

with small tweaks this game is one of the goats for arpgs in terms of style atmosphere and complimentary graphics. this game gives me comfort.

As an action RPG, the action is about as dynamic as a clicker game, and the roleplaying is somehow even less deep than the original Dragon Quest. Not everyone is in on frenetic action or deep roleplaying though, so it could be that its accessibility is its appeal. Sure, numbers go up—and that can be addictive—and it's easy to jump in and repeat. Plus, the vibes are spot on. But is it worth revisiting? Only out of of some cold academic curiosity.

I stayed too long...
And listened a while...
But in the end...
It didn't really matter.

Such a simple concept, yet it’s still fun.
I used to hate randomly generated dungeons. I think this is the first game of this type I liked.
I revisited this game recently while testing a new device and got sucked back into it lol.

After sixteen levels of growing difficulty (the last being totally inflated and artificial, sadly) in this classic action RPG, Diablo satisfies in its now antiquated mouse-clicking adventure for how well its gothic, dark fantasy atmosphere envelops the player within each dungeon they prowl through. This simplicity, combat and leveling, can seem underdeveloped now, but these elements inspire enough goodwill in the accepting player to understand they develop depth in the weapons and spells instead, maximizing player choice to an innovative extent for the time. I don't recall ever getting past the second level in my childhood, so the chance of finally beating this game was well worth the near two decades since I first sat down and entered Tristram.

Great game for the time.

If you're coming from Diablo 3, you won't like this game. In D3, you are overpowered af, and you just mindlessly click on everything and watch your power fantasy play out. And I'm talking about your first 20-hour run-through, where you can't increase the difficulty even if you want to. 20 hours of invincible power-fantasy brain-dead clicking. IF THAT'S YOUR THING, D1 is not going to be a fun time for you and I can't recommend it.

If, on the other hand, you like an RPG-inspired action-adventure that requires you to actually make tactical decisions and push yourself, and you are fond of or can tolerate a retro feel, you should dig this game.

teh Sanctity of this series has been FOULEDD.........

PS: You didn't play a warrior? You used teleport even once? You didn't beat the game, sorry!

The original Diablo was without a doubt an amazing experience at the time when it was released, as the game was the grandfather of the ARPG genre, that is still dominated by Diablo even today.

Sadly, the very first game of this franchise aged rather poorly, making it a very hard game to enjoy these days. On the positive side, the game is rather short, featuring 16 levels and 3 classes (without the Hellfire expansion) making it kind of diversed. However, these 3 classes are very simplistic, and almost play similarly with very tiny differences between them. The bosses are rather poorly made, they are just spongy versions of other mobs, even the infamous Butcher boss feels really cheap, despite how much of a cult following this character has these days.

Overall, I simply cannot recommend the original Diablo to any newcomer to this franchise, as it is a rather rough experience and not very welcoming.

Not as easy or fun to play as 2, but it’s a great time and I was really blown away by the atmosphere and story telling in particular

i feel like if there is one game that blizz or any other "le diablo 2" cloners cannot replicate, it's this game. the schizoid satanic darkcore atmosphere coupled with survival horror tendencies that give you dopamine hits from getting to safety instead of shiny rare nightmare dungeon drops is something no arpg in this day and age will ever give

I've played a bit of 2 and a lot of 3 (and unfortunately, 4), but this was my first time touching 1. Some parts aged a lot better than others. The story is engaging and the way bits are sprinkled out through books is cool, the atmosphere and music combine in a great way to be just eerie enough to keep you on edge, and the overall spookier, more horrorish vibe than the later games sets a nice tone for the game. I'm very mixed on the gameplay, the actual mechanics of it were no issue to get used to and loot and skills were pretty self-explanatory.

The more glaring issues come from the grid-based system. When levels start getting crowded, moving around and aiming gets really rough, with it feeling like you're fighting the game just to hit your target sometimes. I had a good bit of fun with it up until Hell, and Hell didn't make me hate it entirely, but I'm not particularly in a rush to return.

played this when i was 6. changed my brain forever.

I really wish the ARPG genre took inspiration from this game instead of Diablo 2.

A delightful game, especially fun with a friend. Much more arcadey and unforgiving than the later releases, but that’s what keeps me coming back. The gameplay loop of getting stronger and finding loot could be repetitive if it weren’t for almost dying every few minutes and going back into town to do damage control. If you play I beg of you to try the DevilutionX port

Bought this at a game store in Jamaica for $5. Spent my time on the beach playing it via a laptop. Then a decade later bought it on GOG, still as fun as ever,. Graphics have ages poorly, but still worth a play.

Completed the game on PS Vita using devilutionX port. Really liked the game. The soundtrack, the atmosphere is just amazing. Some balancing issues, but that is due to it being the first game of it's kind, and being released that long ago. Have only beaten the game on Normal difficulty, will definitely beat on higher ones, and the expansion as well.

Party like it's 1996. Diablo by today's standards feels pretty simplistic as you just click on things with little tough given most of the time. That almost arcade like simplicity of the game (funny thing for a PC RPG) is its enormous strength. You immediately grasp the basic rules but there is enough depth in equipment system to keep you going till you reach the hell itself. The oppressive atmosphere of medieval dungeons and crypts combined with great music and amazing visual design elevates the game to most satanic shit next to 1993's DOOM and makes the first Diablo absolutely mesmerizing experience even now.

Another relic of its time. The atmosphere is nice but the gameplay doesnt hold up for even 2 hours.
