How the hell do I driiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiift-
I played the seqauel to this when I was a young kid but I was pretty bad at it. Seeing the original game on NSO gave me a chance to try it out and the nostalgia hit me for a bit but yeah it's kinda just the game ever TBH.
This is one I played a lot when I was younger. An extremely fast futuristic racing game on tron-like sci-fi motorbikes. It’s a proper competition-based racing game (where all the racers start at the same place, not an overtaking arcade racer) and has a bunch of weapons thrown into the mix.
The biggest criticism about Extreme-G is probably the handling, which does not manage to keep up with the speed of the bikes. To counter this, the developers added a bunch of things to ease the frustration. Walls don’t slow you down that much (they do slightly damage your shields) and the sides of the track have a kind of “energy barrier” that keeps you on the track. Respawning after falling off is also very quick. Even using the cheat to make the game even faster, making mistakes in races never feels annoying.
There are weapons dotted across the track that you can pick up, which come in lots of slight variations. These have a smaller immediate impact on racers than the likes of Mario Kart, but do whittle away shields (you also have a laser you have access to at any time to do extra damage to shields). However, the weapons are difficult to use effectively and ones like the cannons are more likely to harm you than your opponents.
Extreme-G has a good amount of tracks (compared to other racers at the time on N64, at least), although they do tend to blur a bit together due to the winding nature of them. There’s a track set around some lava games that’s the most difficult track in the game (by a massive margin), and the final track is a futuristic forest with Santorini-inspired buildings and UFOs flying around and looks absolutely gorgeous.
On top of the standard league mode, there’s time trial, practice and a shoot-’em-up mode where you have to blast drones. The multiplayer also has a battle mode in unique arenas, so there’s a good amount of stuff to do in the game.
Extreme-G is still a lot of fun, and manages to feel different to both Wipeout and F-Zero.

I'd play the hell outta this game in high school while listening to Crystal Method and the Spawn soundtrack.
Not very well thought through. Gameplay is severely inhibited by the fact that the vehicles move way too fast.
When I had this on the n64 I thought that it was peak videogame graphics. It wasn't gonna get any better than this. Simpler times. Acceleration and speed felt good in this one.
This was a rental, I sadly didn't own it when it was new. But out of all the games my friends and I played on N64, this was one of the ones that impressed me most. More fun, in my opinion, than Wipeout, on par I think with F-Zero X, this game was a refreshing and unique spin on the "futuristic racer" mold. The "gravity bikes" was a nice take, especially with force fields, and the game has an excellent sense of speed. I had a great time playing this on that first rental, and it remains one of my favorite N64 games.
Sadly, while I had been SUPER stoked for Extreme G 2 to come out, upon renting it, I was VERY disappointed. I don't know what they did, whether it was trying to fit too much graphical detail into too fast of a game, or what, but not only did it just feel undercooked compared to the first, but it honestly made me feel motion sickness trying to play it, which was super weird, and very unpleasant.
But the FIRST game is excellent, and should definitely be played, if you never have!

it could be one of the better n64 games as it runs fairly well and has really strong adrenaline and art direction but there's very little substance to its mechanics. feels overly on-rails and lacks any real depth.
I must admit I am a bit frustrated that Nintendo decided to port this while some obvious classics like Super Smash Bros and Perfect Dark are still missing from the NSO.
But regardless game preservation is game preservation, even for middleware slop.
Maybe that sounds severe. This game is pretty good tbh. Nice vibe, drives nice. But the lack of drifting seems to conflict with the design of the tracks.

Extreme-G is a blast from the past and a solid pick for nostalgic N64 fans! It's all about futuristic motorcycles racing at ridiculous speeds through twisting, gravity-defying tracks. The controls can be a bit finicky at first, and it lacks the depth of a modern racer, but the arcade-y thrills are there. Visuals are understandably dated, but the sense of speed is still exhilarating. It's a good time, especially if you remember it fondly.

Man... I love this game even though I was always aware it's not a great game. Basically an F-Zero clone but without the tight controls, you'll basically spend most of the race bumping at the sideroad. The framerate is bad especially when you compare it to F-Zero X 60 fps.
But I still love it.
The bikes have so much character. The music is insane, definitely one of the best electronic ost out there. I used to make my own tournaments and spending hours and hours on it. Love it.

Every time my friends and I talk about N64 games I bring up Extreme-G and they're always like "What's that?". This game is great, but it's like a game that a character in a Disney Channel original movie would play in the background. Love it. Extremely fast.
