6th Finished Game of 2023
Little Inferno (2012) + Ho Ho Holiday (2022) (Steam)
Oh Boy... and Little Inferno turned 10 years old...
Going back to the golden age of Indie games, World of Goo, Braid, Super Meat Boy... until there was Little Inferno, first Indie game that caused me some impact, a Sandbox about burning objects that ends questioning you "What is the meaning of life?", it's amazing that this game has passed a decade and you still remember details like combos and plot twists.
For those who missed it, Tomorrow Corporation released last year the DLC Ho Ho Holiday, a kind of celebration to the 10 years of the original game, in a kind of "What if...?" the DLC exchanges the co-protagonist Sugar Plumps for a new character named 8-Bit Nate, the game not only adds a new catalogue to burn, but creates a new alternate history that connects to another Tomorrow Corporation dev game.
"It's little hell
It's little inferno just for me
I've got the fireplace
That burns at a hundred billion degrees
It's little inferno just for me".
Difficulty: 03/10
Total playing time: 20h00
Rating: 10/10

Little Inferno: Ho Ho Holidays is a separate version of the base game with Christmas/holiday additions and a replacement for Sugar Plumps's plotline for 8-Bit Nate's (who seems to imply a possible sequel or connection to a future Tomorrow Corporation game. Although some of the gamer humor aimed toward those critical of Little Inferno as a "game" is cute enough and the new items/combos are fun, this is not a DLC worth exploring unless you played the game years ago. It's somewhat disappointing for what it is, yet being what it is, I cannot say it's any worse than the main game ever was. I appreciate the gift regardless after a decade following the game's release.
Don't make the same mistake that I made and replay the original right before you play the DLC. They are basically the same game just with a different pen pal and some additional items and combinations. It's still a good game, the new items are fun, and the new story is just as weird and eery as you would think. It's just that the DLC doesn't really add to the original game, it changes the original game into a slightly different experience.
This isn't really a game. It's the original game, with most of the story taken our, replaced with another story that doesn't fit, and a few more things to burn.
I was really, really disappointed with this one. The first game was SO GOOD. One of my all-time favorites. But this game is just...not a good addition. It feels like someone had a clever idea and they figured they could make some money off of it so they put it together.
My biggest frustrating is the new story doesn't fit at all with the rest of what is going on in the world, so nothing that happens makes any sense. They even call this out at one point when a character you didn't talk to mails you a letter at the end telling that they didn't know you, but here is some story to try and get you through this next part. Just poor execution overall.
Get the original game and play it, but skip this one.
