Sonic fans when a 2d game is hold right to win: "oh dear, oh dear. gorgeous."
Sonic fans when a 3d game is boost to win: "you fucking donkey!"

On a more serious note I have to go against the grain and say I do not particularly like this art style. The level design is awful; when it isn't boring and automated it's "where the fuck do I go". The physics are fine I guess, except the drop dash, which is TERRIBLE in this game; half the time it slows you down. The special stages are boring, and the bosses are awful. As a whole this is just really bad imo.

A fangame I really wanted to like because the art is great here and very unique as far as Sonic games go but unfortunately it's held back by lack lustre level design which just equates to you holding forward the whole time and not much else in terms of involvement.

Ótimo Fan game do Sonic, as fases desse jogo são ótimas é as arte e os visuais desse jogo são maravilhosas

It's alright. Very stylish visual design, although sometimes it's not very functional, with busy backgrounds that reuse parts you assume are meant for the foreground, so several background layers feature "fake platforms". Very nice music throughout (the "Hollie" soundtrack, that is. Didn't play with the "Hi." soundtrack selected). Level design is okay at best, but middling most of the time, with a lot of "Auto-Sonic" sections, and few inventive uses of the few gimmicks the zones feature. Still, a pretty great effort all around.

Super stylish, unique, and fun classic Sonic fan game but the special stages make me want to snap my controller in half

If I could fuck a 2d sonic game it would be this one

I think you can get a gist for how robust the hobbyist game development scene is by observing the current state of Sonic the Hedgehog fan games. After all, a not-insignificant amount of indie and hobby developers cut their teeth on Sonic ROM hacks, building faithful-as-can-be Sonic engines, and decompiling old Sonic games to uncover their many secrets. Ease of access to more powerful game creation tools and an ever-growing level of talent and passion among developers has caused such fan projects to balloon in size and scope as well as buy-in outside of the usual Sonic fanosphere. Take last year's Sonic Triple Trouble remake or Project 06 - we've come a long way from simply putting Dust Hill back into Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Enter Sonic and the Fallen Star, a fan game which came out around the same time as the Triple Trouble remake, and which similarly emulates the gameplay style of the classic Genesis Sonics while shooting for a far different vibe and aesthetic. Fallen Star in many ways reminds me of Before and After the Sequel in that it's very much built from a place of reverence while trying to be different, and much like those games, the end result is a bit of a mixed bag that is ultimately enjoyable despite some of its flaws.

One major area in which Fallen Star differentiates itself from other fan projects is in how much it distances itself from established Sonic games, something that is otherwise still commonplace. Even games like the Triple Trouble remake liberally reuse sprite art from the Genesis Sonics and other games contemporary to them, and Project 06's entire premise is built on improving a fundamentally broken game. You can trace a lot of the DNA in these fan games back to specific official products, but I could probably count the amount of graphics Fallen Star repurposes on one hand, maybe two if I felt like each Chaos Emerald needed its own finger.

The quality of Fallen Star's bespoke artwork is just as impressive as its quantity. Sonic, Tails, Robotnik and the zones they race through are brimming with life and character, and I really got a kick out of all the extra cameos, like Amy showing up on billboards in Discount Districts Zone, and the statues of Mecha and Metal Sonic obscured by overgrowth in Gusty Greenhouse Zone. About the only areas where I felt the visual design was a bit off was in the cutscenes, which feel very herky-jerky and reminiscent of old flash animations. They also go on a bit too long and disrupt the flow of the game. If Fallen Star modeled its cutscenes after Sonic 3 - perhaps not in style but in brevity - then I'd say this game's presentation is flawless. But, unfortunately, it's like, 98% perfect. How horrible.

Fallen Star's gameplay is a lot rockier, however. At its best, it plays just like you'd expect a Genesis-style Sonic to. Momentum and physics both feel appropriate with occasional hiccups, and there's loads of branching pathways and routes specific to each character. Zones also feel a bit too samey, lacking in strong mechanical identity to set them apart, and at times feeling as if whole chunks of geometry were simply pulled from a consumer-grade Sonic the Hedgehog level editor. There are good gimmicks, yes, but the classic Genesis Sonics and even some other fan games are better at making those gimmicks feel like a cohesive part of each Zone's identity, whereas Fallen Star's gimmicks feel more spaced out in favor of long straight-aways and borderline automated tracks. Spectacle and speed are at the forefront while platforming takes a backseat. It's not bad per se, but as someone who generally favors the slower moments of the original Sonic the Hedgehog and the exploration of Sonic 3, I felt Fallen Star's design was a bit lacking and at times just dull.

Most of my venom, however, is saved for the special stages. You run along a linear track collecting blue spheres to gain speed and rings to add time to your clock while chasing after a Chaos Emerald - it's very Sonic Mania. Springs and boost-rings are littered about each stage, presumably to help you gain on the Chaos Emerald, but they're often unpredictable as their efficacy is based on Sonic's current speed. There might be a pit that can only be cleared by jumping into a boost-ring, but because you hit it so fast it overshoots you into another pit further off. Now you've fallen off the course, and because there's so few giant rings scattered about, you either get to reset the game or make peace with doing a second run for the true ending. It's not great.

So yeah, I've got some grievances with the way Sonic and the Fallen Star does things, but what fan game is perfect? At least it doesn't have some aggressive anti-cheat that acts as malware or gets mistakenly (legitimately?) flagged as a keylogger - I feel like you could do much worse. We'vecomealongway!

At times it feels like Fallen Star is carried by its art style, but I still had a great time with it, and I'm looking forward to seeing what developer StarDrop does next with Sonic and the Moon Facility. It definitely shows promise and the fact that they've specifically called out Fallen Star's level design as a key area to improve upon gives me confidence in where they're going, so I'll definitely be playing through that whenever it's ready.

Full of charm, style, and love. Visuals were striking, if a bit too bright. Level design was fun, but it was confusing at times. The bosses were mostly good, though some dragged and some were a bit tedious. One of my favorite 2D sonic fangames to date, can't wait to see how Sonic and the Moon Facility turns out.

Incredibly charming with a great OST. Some of the levels were a bit too straight forward with some odd design choices and discerning the foreground from the background could be tricky sometimes, but overall I had a great time with it.

beautiful levels, cute cinematics, unique art style, a great soundtrac, and very fast level design make this game a fun short and well paced time.
Even though the level design was definetly intended it can be too simplistic at times sorta like a reverse CD, overall this was still very fun and I quite enjoyed it.

I don't think the level design is quite as good as the rest of the stuff here, it has a bit too much automation for my tastes, but this is still a solid fan game.

Once again Sonic fans make a better Sonic game than Sega has in quite some time. The art direction and visual style are perfect. I especially love the Kirby sound effect samples. No Sonic game has looked this good before. That being said, sometimes the visuals can be overwhelming. There are a decent amount of creative ideas in this game. You will ride a rollercoaster in a volcanic area, fly with a plant propeller, or fight a train. The level design is easily the weakest aspect of this game. It is very simplistic with little to no enemies. A lot of the time you will just hold right. The super peel out from Sonic CD is back, which is nice. I typically use it more than the spin dash since it is faster, and I don’t need the defense from the spin dash. I love how Sonic’s legs get all squiggly when he charges up the super peel out. The music as with most Sonic games is top notch.

The gold standard for sonic fan games. Oozing with fun as hell and creative stages, a boppin ost, gorgeous pixel art, and charm up the wazoo you can't really go wrong with Fallen Star. Can't wait to see how their next game improves upon near perfection

One of the best fangames i've ever played in my life. Visually and audibly, its perfect. Soundtrack is amazing, and spritework is gorgeous. However in the later zones, the level design can feel a bit repetitive, but you can look past that because everything else in the game is peak.

It’s Sonic but starry can’t get cooler than that

Really solid fan game but my main complaint is the repetitive level design. Some parts of the game feel way too much automatic and you go fast just for the sake of visuals. Speaking of the visuals, while this game is absolutely gorgeous sometimes the levels seem a bit too crowded, and I can't take what's in the foreground or background. For what it is it's really good and I really enjoyed my time with it, the soundtrack is also fantastic. 6/10

This game sadly didn't vibe with me. All the stages blends together with lacking level design and barren enemy placement.

Holy shit, this was a real fun game to play, the levels were hella creative, music is a banger, and some of the new stuff like the shields were a blast to play. I may shake my head a bit in terms of the bosses, especially the final bosses, but outside that, this was a blast to play!

Sonic and the fallen star é um fangame ABSURDO.

fire..... i loved the visuals it had great character animation and a great art style, the ui was fire too i love cool ui 😭 and the acts had really cool themes.. it was very vibrant and bright but sometimes that made it hard to tell what was background or foreground or if i was about to get hit by a projectile 😢 the gameplay was very fun it felt great to control and i liked just how fast i could go 😮‍💨 tho i wish the zone layouts were a little more involved.. the music was also super super good and i like how the music and the visuals still felt close to the classic sonic games but also like it was its own separate thing !

i accidentally deleted all my save data

Why the fuck did it take me so long to play this

Wow, they went all out on this game and it is quite the enjoyable ride! Soundtrack is incredible, visuals are pretty fire (if a little crowded at times), and the bosses were so unique and amusing to fight. Level design does need some work, but what’s here is entertaining and lovely to look at. With how disappointing Sonic Origins Plus has turned out, Fallen Star is a nice reminder of why I enjoy this series in the first place.

Gorgeous artwork and a solid soundtrack can't save a lot of visual clutter and boring level design.

Would you believe that this is the first Sonic game I ever beat? Not because I hate Sonic games, I just suck ass at them lol.

Maybe that's an indicator that the level design is too simple for it to be good considering the other reviews mention its lower quality but I personally liked it. It made me feel good about myself when I got through it and that's far more than I could ever say about any other Sonic game :')

There are still some BS stuff in there, though. The special stages have got to be the most frustrating kind I've ever played. The room for error is very strict, and the spikes and the springs look too similar. Depth perception isn't great either considering the 2.5D. It also takes all my rings at the end and sets itself up as a checkpoint even if you restart the level. That's not even mentioning the fact that I was only able to find those bonus stages, like, twice (though that might just be me being bad at Sonic in general again)

The general gameplay can also be a bit jank too with the occasional softlocking bug and the game's confusion with handling upside-down running in edge cases. Mid air flight is also a bit confusing too, I didn't really know how to navigate it all that well. I hope they get addressed in a patch later on.

Graphics, vibes and setting were amazing for the most part. Really loved the vibrant, almost dream-like color scheme that tickled my autism brain and then left me effectively gobsmacked with its zones and music.

I liked the occasional pixel art renders for the cutscenes! Not a fan of them zooming in on the in-game sprites and making them bounce with each action. Pixel art and traditional animation techniques don't really mix together. Also not a fan of the smooth rotation of the sprites, though no rules of pixel art were violated? I don't know, it seemed fine in Mania but it irked me here. Not that badly, though.

Overall, solid experience! Not the most fun I've had with a platformer or even a Sonic game for that matter but it was good enough for me to navigate with engagement and finish all the way through! It's free, too, so it's not like it's a waste of anything.
