(Play via Before the Sequel Plus)
You can definitely see it's age in a lot of places, mainly regarding the cutscenes, clashing sprites and in some instances level design with the long stretches in which you do nothing but hold forwards, but it's still very, very enjoyable nonetheless and has stood the test of time in comparison to most other Sonic fan games around this time. Also the soundtrack alone earns it an extra star because like holy fuck.

Whilst this game isn't the best complete fan game you can play (even it's own sequel is better) it is still well worth your time.
What I like most about this one is the way where you switch between Sonic and Tails per Zone. This allows for levels that take advantage of Tails abilities as they don't need to accommodate Sonic.
My biggest gripe is that the physics are a little bit off. Most notably when you hit a badniks from below as you will be shot towards the ground suddenly, this was still catching me out at the end of the game.

The music is bangin and switching between Sonic and Tails every Zone is cool, but this game is held together by used tape and a belt that's too loose. Stuff just doesn't work right sometimes. Few things are as scary as the drowning music playing after you leave the water. It doesn't control quite how 2D Sonic should, he's a little too heavy, but it works fine for these levels.
Pretty alright, it's aged poorly in a few spots, but it's still fun overall.
The Sonic levels are far better than the Tails levels, as the Tails levels are slower-paced.
I dislike life systems when I have to restart an act. I hate them when you have to restart a zone... as you do in this game... ugh.
The level design falls into the trap of being too gimmicky at points, but it can still offer a good mix of platforming and speed.
I enjoyed it a bit more on the second playthrough, almost enough to boost it a point, but not quite enough.
There are no Special Stages, only Bonus ones for extra lives (which are called special anyway lol).
The OST is awesome, and the visuals are nothing to scoff at either.
I didn't mind playing through a second time so I could go fast enough for the good ending!
What really sucks is that there's no definitive way to play this one, especially on Steam Deck where Plus is the only way to have cutscenes (and they're far worse than the original).
