pretty awesome conceptually and in what it says about the arts, and specifically the RPGMaker culture existing at the time. better to make something shit and unique than something fine that's lacking originality.
however, playing it through to completion was kind of a slog. its super short, but the abrasive visuals and trivial combat system combine together to make something simultaneously overwhelming and kinda boring to play?
the soundtrack is incredible, the story and themes are pretty great, but its a game that's more fun to think about than it is to actually play i fear

What is originality? What do we want from video games? Are we playing games to re-experience the highlights of our childhood? Are we searching for something new? Do we need the latest and greatest graphics to satisfy our hunger or just a new perspective? Why tf does a horse made of legs have a 20th century guitar playing boy for a brother?
Fun simple game where you SMACK DOWN various MEATS and CREATURES, make various FRIEND(S) (singular), SOB UNCONTROLLABLY, walk certain distances, never use any items such as BLOOD and NUTS, learn about ARCANE facts that give the game a STATELY PRESENCE even if you never use any of the information, sometimes games need to make TALKING FUN, why do games make so much BORING TALKING.
compared to thecatamites' newer work, especially ...Of the Killer, i think this really just isn't for me. there's some funny/ charming moments, such as with dracula, some moments with other npcs, and silly items and attack descriptions. that being said, it really wasn't as constantly funny or charming as i hoped it would be, especially with something this short. i can, however, appreciate just going out there and MAKING something like this. videogames can just be little short things like this, and that's great.
i'm generally not a turn-based rpg girl and i honestly don't really know why this had to actually play as a tbrpg at all. it didn't add much if anything to the experience for me. you get so many use items and level ups and new gear frequently. so frequently, in fact, that there were a couple times where i got better gear before i even got the chance to really use my previous gear in the battles that mostly felt like fluff. nothing was really funny about the battles thematically or otherwise, and spamming attacks works perfectly fine on everything.
is that the point? is it supposed to just be a mockery of sorts of tbrpgs and their tropes? the ending definitely plays off of this in a mildly funny way, so maybe that's the intention. if that is the case, i don't think it's all that successful regardless. the game feels a little bit too eager to go along with its rpg elements with a progression scheme that is wholly mismatched with the scope of the game. i wish that there was more focus placed on its humorous elements, and would have honestly preferred a simple walk-n-talk rpgmaker game here, though that would probably go fully against the intentions of Space Funeral in the first place.
i could totally be missing something that makes this great to other people. maybe it was really neat back in 2010 or something, but i'm not going to sit here in 2024 and pretend like i really enjoyed it when i didn't.
if you really want what i consider non-stop charm and fun from thecatamites without unnecessary "gameplay" overhead, go play ...Of the Killer and 10 Beautiful Postcards.

It's brief, has a banger soundtrack, and paved the way for some really important stuff later on. Definitely pairs perfectly with Franken, you can see where Splendidland took several direct inspirations and cleaned them up to fit its presentation and unique sense of humor.
I'll be checking out Thecatamites' other work posthaste, for sure!

Real good! I definitely think this is a lesser thecatamites game which makes it sad that this is the only one most people know but still!
The main thing that stuck out to me about this is the soundtrack! I feel like most video games that use pre-existing music just stick to the most obvious choices, aka the same 5 80s pop songs, but Space Funeral is digital Crate digging. Just look at this list! Also I just think that committing copyright violations is a cool and fun thing to do. It feels like every indie dev wants to be a perfectly able-to-be-ported-to-consoles and limited run games-able object and I think that's lame! YouTube to mp3 your entire soundtrack!!!!! Bitch!!!!!!!!!!

this game introduced me to Ruth white and i am forever thankful for that...but about the game, my only gripe is that the second half felt really rushed like when i reached the city of forms i was like "is that it?? its already the end??" we barely explored leg horse house, and lack of content on the snowy wastelands and the beforementioned city of forms left a bad taste in my mouth
space funeral is such a raw game. its a game made for the love of making things, and i adore it for that. i have too many words to say about space funeral, and if i tried to put them all in this review box it would just turn into mindless rambling for like 6 paragraphs, so ill spare you from that. just know that despite its abrasive exterior, space funeral has a lot of great moments, funny interactions, important things to say, and some really unique sprite art that has its own special charm, all in a game you can finish in an afternoon. there's no reason to not play space funeral, considering its free, short, and really good
objectively, a less than stellar game. but it feels like home to me. i would not have gotten this far in life if not for this game. something about the spacey, cobbled-together soundtrack and the eyestrain-inducing glow of the world works to pull me in like not many other games can. also the 'mystery' command in battle is a work of pure genius and more games need to take advantage of it
