Better than the Vita version (it does have some gameplay improvements, such as running in the Lady persona) but still pretty mid.

This game was a flaming pile of dog shit. I feel like I would have enjoyed it more had I played it on Vita, as the Xbox version is a pretty bad port. I really struggled through this one, but I had to send it, for the boys.

I don't know. It's fine, I guess. It's just another 'generic' AC game. When people talk about how stale and boring this franchise is, this game is symbolic of that sentiment.

Play if you really want to play the whole series

Weakest of the franchise i'd say. repetitive and boring story.

An okay entry to the series. The main city of New Orleans is pretty small and not very interesting and the bayou is a pain in the butt to navigate. The canoes were great idea in concept but the use of them wasn't fun and I spent most of my time just swimming since the canoe would randomly get stuck in places on the water. It's a pretty short game with an unsurprising twist but the personas were a cool idea and I wish they had more places to change into them as well as more incentive to use them aside from the Assassin one which I spent 90% of the time as. No fast travel was also a pain especially, again, in the bayou.

+Beautiful and varied locations
+Fun concept with the "censored" story that you need to hack through, and I enjoyed the story overall.
+Despite not being the most interesting character, I really like the representation that Aveline brings.
+A small game that doesn't have one million side things. There are collectibles and side missions, but they felt more optional than the other games, which I find refreshing
+Persona system is interesting, even though it isn't implemented in the best way.

-No fast travel within locations. Even though both New Orleans and the bayou are fairly small, it would have helped the game flow at bit better at times.
-Some (a lot of?) people will find the "smallness" I mentioned as being refreshing to be a deterrent.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I have barely heard anything about it, and while I hesitate to call it a hidden gem, it is definitely a hidden... piece of precious metal? Yeah.

Liberation is a neat spin-off of Assassin's Creed 3. It is smaller in scale and with the HD version, you can still feel that it was originally a PS Vita game. The story feels pretty rushed but again with the setting set in the 18th century like AC III and AC Black Flag it is still interesting. New Orleans is small but neatly designed. The Bayou is cool with all the traversing on and between trees. There is even a small section set in Chichén Itzá where the game feels like an Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider game. You even get a whip on which you can swing. If you want more Assassin's Creed you should give it a try but you can feel that it was not intended to be a full game and more like a smaller addition to the main games. It is still better than Unity though.

Cringe + maidenless + L + Ratio

just like. eh. i dont care for it. i was bored, and its a spinoff, i just watched the endinng on youtube.

Aveline's story is done a disservice by the poorly done concept of Abstergo hiding the truth from you, and it doesn't help that the writing seems hastily done as well. Citizen E doesn't fix it either, as the ending is jarring whether you kill all of them or not.

Furthermore, the remaster of this game (even with AC3R) doesn't really improve a significant margin over the original release on the Vita. The improvements are mostly graphically and framerate-wise, and the game is still locked at a weird 80fps, and the graphics are okay-ish. The gameplay is still affected by the technical limitations of the Vita and is not really improved that much.

Regardless, some of the moments this game has are fairly okay, the Bayou is relatively well crafted and the setting is believable enough. As always, the more Uncharted-esque parts are pretty fun to go through, and the Connor cameo is cool, but seems to just be a way to connect this to AC3.

All around, just mediocre. Could've been good, ended up being a huge letdown for an interesting character.

42/100

optimization for PS3 was so fucking ass that the framerates and levels themselves were absolutely broken. worse than any other AC game before and after it. seriously fuck this game lol

for sure a mixed bag mechanically, sorta half hearted in terms of characters (other than aveline, who is my favorite assassin) but ultimately an interesting game that was too short for its flaws to wind up sinking it.

The worst aspect is the vita mechanics which don't add anything and don't seem to always work. Combat is fine, the Bayou is sort of tedious at times, and navigation (as Lady) can be frustrating because the map doesn't clearly communicate what the actual passageways are. Still though it played okay. New Orleans is well done. The personas mechanic is the kernel of something very good that's only barely explored here. The idea of this black woman being able to leverage multiple aspects of her identity for different purposes is interesting, but mechanically it falls short of its potential. I also enjoyed how the game operates within the larger AC universe. The altering of the genetic memory by Abstergo is also very appropriate given the games themes about slavery and the Revolutionary era. Even when the games mechanics started to wear and the main plot line lost my interest, there is something about those Citizen E events that made me curious and paid off well. So it's an interesting game! Not sure I can call it good but worth a play to see what ideas it's messing with. I understand the console versions address some of my complaints.

It's bad? Like, it sucks that it's that bad, and the worst AC, since the protagonist is so cool. The systems they tried in that one are weird. I don't like how you can have advantages and disadvantages for dressing like a slave or like a rich. It's just not a good AC game.

Really underrated. A more linear affair, but enough open world stuff to wet your whistle. The persona system is cool, and the story is really interesting/well-told. A hidden gem in one of the biggest franchises in the world.

Does not hold up well. Is easily the weakest AC game. The city is unfun to walk through. The parkour lacks, and the story is forgettable.

Las ideas interesantes colonialistas de AC 3 están aquí, sin embargo el juego tiene mecánicas muy repetitivas (aún más para la saga) y si AC 3 está hasta atascado de bugs, Liberation no tiene rival.

The HD visuals can't hide the game's shortcomings, unfortunately. Aveline herself is pretty likable, but the game's story really suffers from being peculiarly disjointed. I'm not sure how best to convey this, but you know how movie tie-in games in the 2000s used to have little disjointed clips of the movie inserted in places, and it felt disjointed and misguided? The whole Liberation story feels like that. To some extent this is lampshaded with an "Abstergo is selectively editing what you see" frame story, I know. But even if you take the time to unlock all of the Citizen E side content, the story is just poorly told, and it's hard to get invested, or get swept away by the big moments.

As for the gameplay, it's mostly fine. The persona system isn't great but is thematically interesting and mostly doesn't get in the way (the game's scenarios are generally pretty good at matching your persona's skillset to the current area and required objectives). The bayou is pretty fun, and I think is generally more successful than AC3's frontier (it helps that it's flatter and less ambitious terrain).

I definitely think it's the weakest of the games frequently considered mainline AC titles.

Solid game. Graphics is quite alright, sometimes get bland on certain sections. The overall gameplay is quite engaging and the controls is very smooth. The mission structures does not feel repetitive. The gameplay mechanics might get repetitive at times. The story is alright, not very memorable.

For a spin-off it’s not awful. But lacks in a lot of repetitive gameplay and boring story.

Overall a mediocre game with a lot of interesting ideas that were sadly executed poorly and hastily. I think the Citizen E cutscenes weren't different enough from the regular ones and overall the main plot ended up feeling rushed and confusing at times as to what it was trying to achieve. Gameplay was overall basic and while the stealth AI wasn't as annoyingly broken as it was in 3, the game overall still didn't offer much to make it stand out in any way. The personas mechanic is pretty interesting, but I think that using the assassin persona whenever you can was better as the other two felt like dumbing yourself down with worse arsenals or freerunning for the sake of easier stealth (which doesn't matter as much cus stealth is pretty easy as an assassin anyways). It very much feels like a filler type of spinoff that publishers throw in while people wait for the next big title. You can skip it if you want. I gotta say tho, the game's most interesting parts were the Tomb Raider-esque segments and I think the gameplay was a lot more interesting and unique during those parts. They are probably the most memorable segments in the whole game for me.

“Switch into the SLAVE PERSONA” is all I need to say, game is mad out of pocket 😭
