Loved the looting and level design of finding goodies, using Plasmids to overcome obstacles and discovering hidden pathways and storage locations. Absolutely hated the overall combat. I spoiled myself on the plot previously, so the twist had no affect on me unfortunately. I will say though that the character recordings left throughout the world were not all that interesting, save for a few, and felt samey as the game progressed.
Holds up surprisingly well in spite of how shallow the immersive sim elements are. Not a huge fan of the plot developments and how they're executed but the gameplay loop is satisfying enough to keep me going through this. We'll have to see about the sequels.
Running around with the wrench and the tonics that make you do extra damage and swing really fast? It slays.

I know this game has fallen out of fashion, but I enjoyed the hell out of it on release. I can shoot lightning at a guy standing in a puddle and then club 'em with a big mace while listening to Billie Holliday. I am sure a dweeb could tell me actually this sucks and I shouldn't be having fun but who cares.
I feel like I'm on the outside with Bioshock - I think they are good games but never understood the feverish fanbase behind them. As someone who loves immersive sims - I just wish Bioshock had a little bit more RPG in it. It's stuck in the middle for me - the shooting isn't satisfying enough for it to be a fun shooter and its not open enough to be a simulation. I love Rapture and I love it's simple, yet effective story, but the gameplay really falls flat for me.
I think its also worth noting that there are not multiple ways to solve problems in this game. The only solution is killing the enemies. And while levels are open-ended the way you progress through them is linear. I just wish the game had more options because I think Bioshock had the potential to be one of the best games ever created but it's ultimately just a "pretty good" game to me.
