I adore the paper doll Akihiko Yoshida aesthetic and am always a sucker for snappy job system combat! The characters in BD aren't the deepest but they're charming little sketches that play off one another well and really grow on you with time. And yet... I feel like this game relies a little too much on Final Fantasy nostalgia in a way that almost feels a bit like easy pandering. I never thought i'd say it, but i just miiiight be getting a little fatigued with magical crystals at this point!!! Even the attempt to deconstruct the trope (the crystals are actually BAD and must be STOPPED) is kind of done to death and equally prominent in the series? it hardly functions as an exciting twist or subversive moment. This is a consummately made and satisfying title with so much to enjoy, but as a classic JRPG obsessive there was a lot this game did that simultaneously warmed my heart and left me feeling a bit patronized. Which is what I signed up for, I guess? And that's the uncomfortable problem!
The first meaningful advancements in turn-based battles since Final Fantasy X. The brave and default system is genius. It drives me crazy that Square Enix was so surprised by this game's success. Nobody stopped wanting turn-based RPGs, they were just starting to get stale and needed to be iterated on, not abandoned entirely.
The end of the game is monotonous and highly questionable, as anyone will tell you. The biggest offense in my mind is that in order to get what one would consider the "true" ending, one has to completely ignore everything the game is telling you about its themes. The game was more or less asking me to both do something extremely monotonous, AND be oblivious. I refused.

Hey, get this, folks. This game is—wait for it—unnaceptable!
Really, though, it's not great. While the combat mechanic is interesting in the beginning, the interactions between class skills in the game (there are a lot of them, to be fair) mean that it's fairly easy to muck around a little with class combinations to create a party that can beat anything with auto-battle on, mitigating any late-game difficulty (here's a tip: ninja with valkyrie skills and 1 team member has hasten world on).
The second half of the story is notoriously bad, and the character writing is wretched. There's much better stuff out there.

Bravely Default is a wonderful take on the turn-based RPG genre. The characters, music, and story, along with the beautiful hand-drawn environments make the whole adventure a joy to go through. The only downside is how repetitive it can get due to the plot, but the large variety of jobs offers a nearly endless number of ways to equip your party for different playstyles.
You have in your hand an amazing RPG, isn't the most mindblowing thing of all time, but it's super solid, and that i could re-visit from time to time, but then you completely fucks up the ending with some stupid time loop shit that gets annoying already in the second time, and then it does again, and again, and again, and it starts feeling like that the game's bugged, or it's a glitch, but no, it's just that stupid, you could've been an instant classic, but decided to shit yourself at the finish line.

This is a good job-based RPG by Square that is basically Final Fantasy in all but name (and in the fact that there aren't Moogles or Chocobos). It adds a cool twist to the traditional turn-based RPG battle system. However, there are some flaws. Sometimes the game is too frustrating. Some parts of it aren't too exciting. Ringabel is a pretty weak character. It is pretty satisfying in the end, though.
One of the greatest soundtracks of all time, first half is an incredible romp which, despite half the party being dull, is easily one of the best JRPG experiences I've ever had. Really fun combat/job system, visuals ooze charm too.
Entire essays could be written dissecting the second half of this game and how it's generally thought to be a trainwreck in terms of gameplay and narrative (though the actual idea is admittedly very cool). I'll just leave it at saying that I agree.

It is one of the the first non pokemon/mario rpgs i played and still hold up as one of the best in the genre. The jobs system is ridiculously fun with its customisability, allowing for a level of depth that other turn based rpgs do not deliver. The graphics are gorgeous as well and stand out as among the best the 3ds has to offer. The very endearing cast and fun story also are a plus
