This review is subject to change, but as of Chapter 2, Toby Fox is well on his way to surpassing Undertale. Deltarune has a now clearly defined direction that corrupts the themes of Undertale in a new and fascinating way, while preserving Fox's signature style.

My favorite video game of all time isn't finished yet.

This will be the best game I’ve ever played when it’s finished

Short and sweet. Classic Toby Fox banger. Music slaps too.

This game is awesome, it's characters are so cool and also so charismatic and lovable, the fight system is really interesting, and the music is so fucking good, Toby is such a genius. I'm not an rpg person but I love this game so much.

If and when this game gets finished, it looks like it's going to be Wild. Judging by these first two chapters, it's even more of a video game about other video games than Undertale was, exchanging that game's fetish for expectation subversion for this sort of repeated denial of fanservice.

Some immediately interesting ideas are being developed, especially in chapter 2. A primary focus is the lack of choice in life, with some fun little solipsist undertones about the game's characters being stuck acting out the story itself. Even more interesting is the way Toby Fox is exploring the division between the player and the player character. In particular there's some optional content that I dare not spoil which really deeply unsettles with how it recontextualizes an NPC in the same light you might otherwise see the player character.

There's just a lot of strange storytelling feats being pulled off already, is my point. I'm unspeakably excited to see where the rest of this goes so that I can repeatedly rewrite this review with successively higher scores.

I'm looking forward to more wacky secret bosses that will spawn a meme deluge for months.

Fun game, cool characters, decent gameplay. Felt like Undertale but better

If I had a nickel for every indie game released in the last few years that had expansive DLC where the final boss was a Punch-Out!! match, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice.

so far, this game is wonderful. the combat isn't anything to write home about, but the characters, story, and emotions felt are overwhelming and powerful. incredible game.

(at the time of writing this i have played the first 2 chapters)

as someone who was big into undertale at the height of its popularity, i can safely say that deltarune is better than undertale in practically every conceivable way

The full game isn't even out yet and it's still my favorite piece of art/media ever created.

Even with only 2 chapters released to date Deltarune makes the generation defining Undertale look like a spin-off/prototype. Every aspect of the design and writing feel more nuanced and mature than Toby Fox's previous work with subtle improvements to the artistic direction that really bring these simple character sprites to life.
Can't recommend you jump into this one enough but I'll stress that playing through at least the true pacifist route of Undertale will add a lot to your experience.

When this is done it'll likely be the third game in my top 10 that can be abbreviated to "DR"

Best game. Even better that Undertale.

So far it has the potential to become one of my favourite stories with interesting concepts being developed and Toby's gamedev skills visibly being honed further and further.

this game isnt even finished and its better then undertale somehow

excited for chapter 3 in 27 years

beautiful and charming and makes me feel warm and young and kind

Game is really fun and funny so far with the demos.

A very solid successor to Undertale. The gameplay expands with the addition of a more traditional RPG party and the TP system. The characters and soundtrack are good, Rouxls Kaard, the Queen, and ESPECIALLY Spamton being my favorites so far. I don't think the current lineup of characters and music is overall as good as Undertale, but what we've seen so far give me hope future chapters create a game just as special as Undertale.

BETTER THAN UNDERTALE???? TOBY FOX KEEP ON WINNING

Deltarune>>>>>>>>>>>>>abismo>>>>>>>>>undertale

Though the game has only had two chapters completed so far, there is so much to this game that makes it so worth playing, whether you know about Undertale or not (though usually it's preferred to play Undertale first to feel more connected with characters). It improves upon what Undertale built up in so many ways and I just love it for that. It has enriching characters, hilarious dialogue, amazing music, and a story that really keeps you hooked and leaves you wanting more. Not to mention the number of secrets and details there are scattered throughout the game. It's literally just perfect and I'd highly recommend it.
