Easily the best of Nintendo's arcade games. While Donkey Kong felt more like a game that should have been a console game originally, Mario Bros. and its more streamlined gameplay feels much more suited for the arcades. The game features a nice colorful cast of characters, including the introduction of Mario's green brother, Luigi. Turtles, crabs, flies, and icicles are found throughout the various sewers and all have different attritubes to make them stand out. While the movement is slippery, the game controls great and makes skillful play all the more satisfying after mastering the momentum. And the best part of all is that this can even be played with two players simultaneously. Fantastic game all around. However, I would suggest skipping the 2600 version.
One of the forefathers of single-screen platformers like Bubble Bobble and the like, and one that surprisingly still holds up well aside from jump physics that take a bit to get used to, and repetitiveness in longer play sessions.
The Game Boy Advance remake does wonders to improve the game, though, but you really can't go wrong with the original arcade version.

Made it to Phase 30 (using the supremely useful Switch Online save states and rewinds, admittedly) and I think I've seen enough.
The gameplay loop is definitely addictive but deeply repetitive. The fact that the phase layouts don't change at all is rough.
I haven't played the multiplayer (difficult on the Switch Lite), but I imagine that would bump the score up a tad.

Mario Bros is an arcade game where Mario (and Luigi) both try to kill enemies which varies depending on the enemy. The game as far as I'm aware goes on infinitely.
There's other Arcade games that are better, but this one is a fun time waster if you're bored. It's pretty repetitive and it's not that exciting.
The NES port of this game is pretty bad, everything becomes downgraded and you cannot move left or right midair when jumping which REALLY hurts the game (you can take half a star away from the NES port).
The GBA remake is much better, but because it's on the GBA the screen is really zoomed in. Making it incredibly hard to play and damn near impossible after 10 levels or so. But in my opinion, it is the most playable version and the version I get the most fun out of. This version would get an extra half a star.
Overall, this game blows it's not really worth checking out today. If you're a fan of this game you'll probs like Mario Clash for the Virtual Boy.

My actual first Mario game, loaded from a cassette tape onto a Spectrum and played with the keyboard. Not particularly interesting or fun to handle. Years later I played it with Fisher and co, it's a good laugh when you're working against each other. One time I won by grabbing a mystery mushroom, shouting "MYSTERY" as the characters swapped places and my opponent ran into a koopa.
The original Mario Bros. is honestly not very good. My main problem here is that the movement feels way too stiff and slippery at the same time. It's to the point that it's a struggle to get around the map and stun enemies to defeat them. (And those ice enemies can take advantage of your movement struggles to make platforms even harder to move on, which is real nice) The gameplay loop would be much more enjoyable if it wasn't so hard trying to maneuver yourself around. It also doesn't help that a much better version of this is included in all of the Super Mario Advance games as well as one of my favorite games of all time, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. You're much better off playing that version on one of those games. (I couldn't imagine paying money for a sort of Virtual Console release of this when that version exists)
