Only played it once, unlike PM and TTYD which I've done repeat playthroughs of, but I really enjoyed my sole playthrough of this. Don't think the gameplay holds up, especially compared to the last 2 games, but hands down the best story out of the bunch. Best characters too, this game got a surprising amount of laughs out of me. Still can't believe Intelligent Systems/Nintendo actually came up with that whole Francis encounter.
A lot of people don't like this game because it's a platformer, but I think it's just as good as the other Paper Mario games. The writing, the storytelling, the characters, the gameplay, this game is so well crafted. If you've written this one off for being different from it's prequels, I urge you to give it a chance, you wont regret it.

This was the first Paper Mario game I ever played, and if I had never played TTYD it would be a full 5. Considering this game on its own away from the other Paper Mario games it's actually still a 5. I think people shit on this game too much for not having a turn-based battle system and having too much platforming. The 2D-3D gameplay is pretty fun and the characters and story are all worth experiencing. There are a couple of bum chapters and the backtracking padding is horrid upon replaying, but if you're just looking to play the game once and say you've played "the first bad Paper Mario game", then you'll have to play Sticker Star afterwards, because this is not a bad Paper Mario game.
Super Paper Mario probably has one of the best stories to ever come out of a Mario game. Good spin on the platforming genre and gave a nice blend of RPG elements. Despite it being the penultimate downfall of the Paper Mario series, it still holds up very well and isn't held back by the fact that it's different. Creates unique characters and dialogue that are very enjoyable. Mr. L for smash.
Super Paper Mario is a weird clash of genres. In some ways it feels as though it's at war with itself. The story interrupts the gameplay, and the gameplay interrupts the story. It manages to be fun and memorable despite that. The series charm is mostly intact, though the world and its denizens aren't nearly as interesting as the previous RPG entries, but that's to be expected. This game is a sore spot for many fans, as the shift in genre really wasn't asked for, and the familiar, beloved style of TTYD has yet to return.
Superb tongue in cheek writing with lots of funny moments. It can get surprisingly dark without ever having tonal dissonance, has some of the most interesting characters in a Nintendo game, and displays tons of creativity in both the writing and aesthetic.
Sadly it plays like a mediocre puzzle platformer with some RPG elements mixed in. It generally lacks any interesting gameplay situations and doesn't really do anything with the central mechanic of switching between 2D and 3D. Ultimately the gameplay holds it back from reaching the heights of its predecessors, in spite of the great writing.
