this is such a strange game to me. i understand that it is totally just more open world ubisoft slop, but i fucking love it. i think there's something to the first thing you experience in a medium, and far cry 5 was the first far cry game i ever played. so with no prior concept of a far cry game, of course i would fall in love with this one. beyond just the fact that this was my first FC game, i love the midwest. i mean, i do live in it, and at times want only to leave it. but i love the midwest. there's an energy of community that permeates most towns in the midwest and far cry 5 captures that so well. everyone is so weirdly friendly and accommodating. the game world is beautiful. i found myself pulling over on the side of the road and getting out of my stolen cult truck to look at the views. its a truly gorgeous looking game. i am also obsessed with cults and how they control masses of people so this game's overarching story kept me enthralled the whole way through. great game, understand how ppl dont like it but it is endlessly replayable to me. every time i see a picture of this game i just want to jump right in again
Far Cry 5 is probably the most fun I've ever had in the series, with gameplay that is actually fun and the amount of "checklist gaming" being trimmed down in comparison to the rest of the Far Cry games. Environments are beautiful and it makes me so excited to see what settings Ubisoft would explore next. There's plenty of vehicles, guns, and a wealth of "Arcade" content.
But oh lord, the story is quite bad. No amount of acting talent can save it. I seriously fail to understand why Ubisoft is so damn bad at crafting good narratives for their games, with these main characters spouting this forced exposition at you that is just so boring. There were a bunch of plotholes and annoying and overused tropes that made me roll my eyes so many times. The story does shine sometimes, but those moments are extremely rare. Also, who thought that a silent protagonist was a good idea? Everything just felt very impersonal and detached from any emotion.
With that being said, there were plenty of side missions and characters that I genuinely thought were hilarious and super well done. But at its core, this game is about gameplay first. If you're interested in Far Cry 5, I'd recommend playing it with a friend, or just hopping in solo fully expecting a poorly written and executed story.

The one Ubisoft out of the past 10 or so years that I actually enjoyed and didn't rush to the ending, the game gives you more freedom in how you approach side and main quests which is refreshing, and the story taking the piss out of the basket case that is modern American politics and culture was fun.
