Forget about Denuvo, Forget about Epic Games stuff, it doesn't bother me. What bothers me is the actual game itself.

This game suffers from two very big problems, two problems that I believe let the entire experience down. I'm talking about:

1: The boss fights.
2: The level design.

The boss fights are some of the worst ever in a Sonic game, and believe me, I've played nearly all of them. How we can go from some of the most exciting, fun bosses in Sonic Frontiers to the absolute snooze fest this game offers is staggering. The bosses go on far too long.

Every single boss in the game requires a huge amount of waiting that it makes them so boring. It just comes down to attack once, wait 20 seconds, attack again, wait 20 seconds, atta-oh no you missed, wait another 20 seconds. It's terrible. That's not even mentioning that some of their attack patterns are needlessly strict and some bosses have cheap instant kill moves - gotta love it! >:I

The level design is awful, just awful. The best comparison is to the Advance titles but not the good zones in Advance 1 and 2, I'm talking about the really bad ones from Advance 3. Constant examples of the level automatically throwing you into enemies after speed sections. The game punishes you so many times for going fast, bottomless pits, cheap enemies (many suffer from the same waiting problem as the bosses) and just overall boring design.

No level stuck out to me when I finished the game, no real good music tracks accompany them either which is so disappointing for Sonic which always has great level themes.

Overall, the game is dull, the art style is cute and fun but when the game is just so painfully average, it just sucks. I was really looking forward to this but unfortunately this is not the successor to Mania I was looking for. Definitely not worth full price! Wait for sale and even then, be cautious.

It doesn't add interesting to the 2D games, with boring ambience and generic levels, but the worst thing by far were the glitches (in the multiplayer mode). Me and my friends died countless times because of the floor just dissapearing or clipping in the walls. This game is a complete disaster, I didn't have many hopes but it was worse than I could ever imagine.

Tried a replay on ps5. To see if my thoughts changed with updates and a better system. Noticing more glitches and general issues. Every Sonic fan who harassed me when I said it was mid on twitter especially that guy with the poorly drawn Gengar sona who shouldn’t touch a pen or keyboard again for that matter, I apologize. I was wrong. It isn’t mid. It’s BAD! There. I changed for you!

It’s pretty good, but not great

Wow, they actually did it. From the bad Yoshi's New Island to this, what a turnaround. A very good Sonic game, with excellent level design and on point physics. Only downsides prevent it to stand along the greats are the limited content and a subpar soundtrack.

Congrats, Arzest. ^^

You know? The first time I watched the trailer for this game, I thought it looked really good! However, it only took me watching the trailer more than once to notice this game looked mid as all hell.

Turns out I was right after all, and everything about this game is not only worse than Mania...But reminds me HEAVILY to Sonic 1 and Sonic CD. You know, the two worst fucking classic Sonic games of all time.

- Presentation is bland
- Music is shit
- Bonus minigames suck
- Bosses are bland and some of them take way too long!
- Chaos emerald abilities are pretty useless and pointless
- The co-op aspect feels like an afterthought
- A LOT of these levels are SUPER slow, frustrating and tedious, and feel like the worst levels in Sonic 1 (So most of them)
- The "final boss" against Fang is so unbearably obnoxious and unfair that I didn't even bother finishing this fucking game.

I remember reading somewhere that one of the level designers from Sonic 1 and CD came back as leading designer for this one, and people were talking about that like that was a good thing? That explains why this game sucks so incredibly hard honestly, but I don't know why ANYONE would think that was a good idea in the first place. Nothing against the guy...But please...Don't come back to make another one of these...I'm begging you.

This game sucks and pisses me off. It's embarrassing that this is what we got right after Mania...But it's even more embarrassing to have released this crap on the same month as Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

There's a lot good here, but a lot of bad as well. Aesthetically, it plays way too safe and isn't nearly as appealing to me as something like Sonic Mania. For once, they got the classic physics emulated in 2.5D very accurately. 40% of the music is bangers and the other 60% is super harsh tinny sounding fake genesis music (and the main problem with those songs is the instrumentation, there's some great re-written versions of those songs out there).

The boss fights are absolutely awful and have you waiting for minutes before you're allowed to attack. There's a weird emphasis on multiplayer which I don't think anybody wants. It costs $40 more than Sonic Mania which is just insane.

I couldn't even get past the final (or is it the penultimate? not 100% sure) boss because of the brutal difficulty spike, lack of rings, random jank, and time waiting to get back to the point I died at every time. It just stopped being fun. It's a shame, it has lots of potential.

I know some people hate it, some people love it. I closer to the loving side. Its has a lot of great details and i like how theres a boss at the end of every level. (Even if a few BLOW COCKS)

Let’s start with the good: a lot of the acts are a fun ride, even though the later levels start to drag on for too long. They have the usual Sonic trappings, but nothing I can’t deal with. As a Sonic fan, I appreciate the new zones after seeing Green Hill Zone regurgitated countless times, even if they’re sometimes just recolours or combinations of older stages for the most part. The emerald powers were a surprisingly nice addition, especially avatar and bullet were great fun to use. Sadly, the rest of the emerald powers kind of fell flat, and they lack a sort of snappiness to them which makes them feel a tad clunky. I didn’t mind the special stages too much, they’re inoffensive, pretty much.

The rest goes from inconsistent, to bad to worse. The music goes all over the place: from bops, to forgettable to kind of annoying to listen to. The multiplayer just straight up doesn’t work, it all moves too fast so most of the squad is stuck being teleported to where the fastest player is at. The battle mode is more chaotic than fun, and the parts to customise your robot cost way too many medals for the amount you get through naturally playing. I found out the hard way that for some reason the paintjob is a one-use item, which makes it even more pricy. It just takes the fun out of collecting medals when you need so many for even basic stuff.

Now, the elephant in the room: those S&+§@# bosses. Some of them are fine, mostly when you can use the emerald powers to make them go by quicker. When you can’t use these powers, however, which happens a lot in the later stages, they become a slogfest. It’s a waiting game of when the enemy shows off their weak point, get one hit in, and then wait a bunch more until you can hit them again. They’re often not even that difficult pattern-wise, they just take ages, or have RNG elements that make the fight drag on even longer. My frustration truly started to ramp up with the Fang fight and the final boss. The final zone even has a pretty cool gimmick that legitimately impressed me, but those two fights just dragged on for what felt like ages, and my goodwill for the rest of the game steadily dropped with every failed attempt. For a game all about speed, it does feel like a lot of it is rather slow. Boss animations take just a bit too long, auto-scroller segments are a problem as usual when you’ve already done that segment a few times, I felt myself often thinking ‘Get a move on!’.

The extra story adds difficulty in the way of more enemies and more spikes, but since some of those enemies were already pretty annoying and putting spikes everywhere with a camera that’s too zoomed in to tell what’s coming… well, it just underlined the game’s shortcomings even more, and I decided I had enough. At least the new character, Trip, is very nicely designed and her moveset is quite unique, but that wasn’t enough to make me trudge through a worse version of an already occasionally very tedious game.

I don’t regret playing through sonic superstars, but after the fun I had with mania, this is decidedly a huge step down.

fiel a los sonic clásicos hasta en el hecho de tener un boss final de mierda

I'm sure I'm hurting a few people's hearts when I say this is my first experience with a Sonic game. I had fun overall (This game is hard to play when high, JS). I played the entire thing co-op with my boyfriend and I felt like it's just a game genre that doesnt work well with co-op, due to camera restrictions. While a fun idea in theory, I just don't think it worked well for this style of game. MOST of the level designs/environments were fun but none of the bosses stood out to me and were more annoying than anything. The final boss fight was horrendous during the first phase, doable on the second phase but not fun. While I did have fun in the moment playing it, the overall experience felt mediocre.

why do people hate this game so much anyway? most of the criticism i saw this year was all gross overexaggerations.

After finally playing this game myself I can say the New Super Mario Bros. comparisons are accurate.
.Multiplayer that feels like the game wasn’t designed for it.
.Cheap looking graphics.
.Hit or miss music.
.Great game feel.
.Pretty good level design paired with un-interesting level themes.

Also every boss in this game can go fuck itself except the ones for Cyber Station and Press Factory Act 2.

Havent played a lot but I likey.
it fun

7/10

Physics are fine. Early zones are okay. Music is hit or miss.
It doesn't take long for the cracks to start growing though, and by the midgame this is an absolutely miserable experience. It displays a lack of originality on par with Sonic 4 and a fundamental misunderstanding of how to design classic sonic levels. Honestly? I'd rather play Sonic 4.

Decent levels, good bosses! A totally good game.

A strong start that fizzles out by the midpoint and then just feels miserable by the end. Going super is a hinderance due to the fact that the framerate TANKS. Boss design gets more and more frustrating as each one comes and goes. Hopefully, the next 2D sonic game learns from the faults of this one.

Total mince, don’t waste your money.

The game itself is pretty “just okay,” and I may come back to it eventually to do more beyond the main campaign.

However, if I end up doing that, it will NOT be the Switch port. Even with its flashier, fast-paced visuals, indie titles of the same scope are infinitely better optimized. Several really bad stutters in almost ever level really marred the fluidity of the experience.

The level design, music, and bosses are trash, glitches were happening wayy too often. Disappointing that this is gonna be a lot of people’s first classic sonic game. Play mania instead

Probably the best 2d sonic game Sega has made since the mega drive days. Power ups don't add much for the most part and the boss fights go on too long but the game does play just like classic sonic games did

The final boss is bs

a solid 2d sonic title that's held back by the difficulty spike toward the end of the game. i mean seriously did they have anyone playtest those final bosses? every single one of them are insanely hard and tedious. the co-op was cool even though it didn't really work since whoever was farther into the level would be the only one playing while everyone else is constantly respawning

Really wish this was better than it was

A return to the classic formula with a fresh look and full multiplayer, Sonic Superstars is essentially Sonic 5, in a good way. Not only does it look fantastic and wonderfully cartoony, but it brings completely new stages to the series for the first time in years! And most of these stages are fantastic, with a great sense of flow that only feels better the more you improve.

There's several playable characters which is fantastic for replayability, and tons of secrets to discover in every stage. It also introduced Emerald powers, abilities each character can use after collecting chaos emeralds, and I love this. It gives you more incentive than ever to find the special stages and unlock these powers.. which isn't hard because the special stages are absolutely piss easy, weirdly so.

The levels are honestly great and the music is pretty brillaint, though some tracks are clearly better than others.

The place the game loses the most points are the boss fights, they really missed the mark here. Some are easy pickings, but many of them just go on way too long, dragging out with long periods of invulnerability, and too many phases. Now quite a few bosses can be cheesed using emerald powers - and I like that, but the final bosses are awful. The final boss of hard mode is so drawn out with no checkpoints, and the true final boss isn't hard but goes on for an enternity.

That aside though, Sonic Superstars has a great energy, and i enjoyed it a lot - 8/10

i was rlly excited for this game, i even played the demo at gamescom before it’s release

unfortunately when the game released i was extremely disappointed, everything past the first 2 zones is decent at best and extremely annoying at worst. the levels are filled with annoying and unfair instakill deaths

the story is also extremely confusing, they tried to explain it through the same way as the original games but it doesnt work here because the game has modern graphics, the story is trying to be more complex than the genesis games and they just dont do it as well in general which is so weird because this game’s marketing was deadset on trying to convince you that the story was important

after beating the main story you unlock trip’s story! its terrible!! they cranked the instakill deaths up so much and the story is even more confusing this time! its rlly obvious this was just a lazy thing they did to pad out the game but this is so annoying cause it locks you out of the true final boss, which i havent even played yet because of how annoyingly bad trip’s story is.

i cant even say the music is good, some of the songs are great while others sound like they’re straight out of sonic 4

and finally, the bosses are just terribly designed, so much of it is so unfairly designed and they drag on for 2 times longer than the actual act

in conclusion, just play sonic mania, its cheaper and way way way WAY better.
