all time classic, beware the fast UFO's

A simple early arcade game with a satisfying difficulty progression, giving you ramps of tension followed by little moments to breathe. Not much to it, but it certainly set the stage for so much to come.

Simple and effective at what it does, but far surpassed since. Space Invaders is sort of the Seinfeld of arcade games: revelatory and groundbreaking at release, but everything in it has been done so much better by its successors that the original can seem a little too simplistic for its own good.

Bally Manufacturing predicted the current-day Leverless Controller craze about 40 years in advance???????

One of the best arcade games ever made.

Hell yeah.

I give Space Invaders a 6!

Iconic as hell. The alien sprite alone is the poster child of the "So retro!" mindset. Gameplay is very generic but revolutionary for the time considering this game came out in the 70s which is absolutely wild. This game was the blueprint for multiple generations of games and gets most of its merits/score from that alone.

You can probably categorise video game history into two distinct eras, Before and After Space Invaders. Sure Pong was THE game to kick things off, but Space Invaders was when the floodgates were soundly blown open.

Original versions cheated the colour pallete with overlays, but what does it matter? This game is a truly addictive masterpiece, all it takes is the sound of that unforgettable thrumming alien beat to transport you in time, paused at the entrance to an arcade again.

One button, two directions, and nothing else to do but fire upwards constantly, and therein lies the beauty. Avoiding the enemy bullets, utilizing the bases for cover, and getting the timing right to land a well-placed shot takes a great deal of skill. There's a reason this game is so well loved and still played by devotees some forty five years after its launch.

iconic game, played the arcade cabinet during a videogame museum exhibition (that sentence could give some people a heart attack).
I legitimately had fun with it.

Sometimes it's okay to forget history

My parents think that every game is either this or GTA

Why don't the aliens just rush the turret? Are they stupid?

I mean its impact for the gaming industry is enough really,

Just play one or two screens. It's extremely easy, so it drags on and on, and gets boring very quickly. If you play a little it is quite fun though.

DUN, DUN, DUN, DUN
I gotta respect it for inventing the difficultly curve
It so real for that

Besides being legendary., I could make this from scratch in like 4 hours.

it grew on me after i figured out how you're supposed to play it. this is history folks

good but i really just wanted to see massive letters at the top of the screen spelling out "COKE WINS"

apparently Taito didn't allow Atari to put the 2600 version on the Flashback consoles, so lucky me I got the arcade version

While still having very simple game mechanics, It created what was probably the most compelling gameplay at the time of its release.

I reviewed this as day 2 of my Arcade a Day series and my full review can be found below.

This is one of the most classic games in history. Unlike pong though, I legitimately find it to be pretty fun. Plus the titular space invaders are iconic.

Even if Pong is the true definition of a retro game, Taito's Space Invaders would easily take the crown for being the most iconic piece of video gaming history. For such a simple premise with some of the earliest sprite work, an engaging challenge and the opportunity to get a high score, just be glad it isn't another paddle-and-ball game.

There's better versions of the concept out there today, but it's still a fun time.

This game is a classic, but its gameplay isn't quite as good as many other arcade titles.
