One of the best games ever to introduce anyone to the greater world of RPGs. It's still Mario so the plot is baby-mode, but the combat is so engaging and varied and the writing is very good and holds up nearly 20 years later. The world is very well-condensed and it's very easy to navigate the world quickly, no time is wasted loading between the map transitions and you're constantly engaged. Badges and armor definitely can help you overpower the endgame and unfortunately you can't remove them when they're equipped, that's my #1 gripe with the game. You can opt not to equip anything past the mandatory item use if you want more of a challenge, though. The game is balanced better around no equipment than equipment, funnily enough however. Mush Badge OP. Great final boss, but getting there can be a gauntlet that the rest of the game doesn't really prep you for. Still a fire game and I'm glad the difficulty peaks at the end. EZ 5 star game.
I first played this game as a kid on my gameboy, and I have to say, it's held up incredibly. Tons of great jokes and humor, lots of personality, fun combat and mini games, all combined into a fantastic game.
What distinguishes this game is the writing and great personality given to the Mario bros, even though they don't say a word of dialogue! So many gags (mostly at Luigi's expense) and fun reactions, great animations in and out of combat, and fun scenarios ranging from Luigi getting hypnotized to getting squished into a surfboard! The rest of the cast is phenomenal as well, from amnesiac Bowser to the guffawing Fawful, Christmas tree crabs and yoshi enthusiasts. Stellar dialogue and hilarity abound.
Combat in this game is solid. Bros moves are fun to master, though I wish it was easier to unlock advanced moves. The bosses are well designed and unique, if not terribly difficult, ranging from fighting living soda to a lovestruck birdo. I also want to mention the great combat animations on both sides of battle.
Gameplay is a fun experience all around. There's a plethora of minigames, none of which are required to play more than once, and you can choose which one to earn beans. Admittedly, it's occasionally annoying to deal with dozens of enemies when you just want to explore and find hidden blocks and beans. The platforming and puzzles are well-executed, so that there's a lot of good content in between fights.
Overall, one of the best jrpgs out there, driven by great characters and gameplay.

I think this is one of the worst Nintendo games I've ever played, easily. I'm struggling to think of anything positive to say about it. Terrible pacing, clunky combat that lasts way too long for its own good, overworld traversal that feels like a chore, a perspective that's too zoomed in for a low-resolution Game Boy Advance display, a ton of tedious minigames that contribute nothing to the overall game - and also maybe the worst escort mission I've ever experienced in a game. I'm astounded by how awful it is.

This is another game on a list of games where ultimately I have to ask, "why did I wait so long to play this game?" And to add insult to injury, one of my personal favorite games was inspired by this one, so it should've been more obvious I'd love it. And love it I did.
I took me a little bit to get used to the combat. I wouldn't say I'm the best at timing my actions, but when I was able to get things done successfully, it felt really fun. Ultimately it just took a lot of practice. But figuring it out was so fun. Early on, the game tells you that each enemy has a 'tell'. This tell lets you know how to react to each attack, and when I figured out what each tell was, it was exhilarating. It was definitely hard to react to some enemies, but it's hard to tell whether that's on me or the game, and I'm leaning towards it being on me.
I would say the game is far from challenging. I suppose the challenge comes from how well your reaction time is, but even then most enemies don't really deal that much damage. But in turn, that's what make the bosses so fun, they are actively challenging, and you have to be really focused. The final boss especially was one of the best moments for me in particular, it encapsulates every aspect of the game, in such an amazing way.
The story isn't anything too crazy, but then again, I wasn't expecting anything like that. It's silly and comedic and I really like that. The characters all have their unique charm, and it allows even the characters with little screen time to be at least somewhat memorable. It's just really nice.
Ultimately I really loved this game, and I still have to wonder why it took me this long to play it. I have to play more of this series, it was such a fun time.

I can see why many people love this game. Its combat is easy to grasp and very fast-paced, the writing is really good and made me laugh out-loud in a few moments and the overall adventure is not really long compared to other turn-based RPGs.
I'm still not the biggest fan of those types of RPGs, but besides the final boss taking too long for its own, I had a good time with this title!

The best way to describe Superstar Saga is charming. It's not a particularly long or difficult game. It's not a particularly hard game. It's not a particularly complicated game, but it is charming. The Beanbean Kingdom is weird enough to be interesting, while not so weird that you ever really need to question anything. The gameplay is simple and both enemy attacks and bros. attacks are kind of simple when compared to the later M&L games, but timing your button presses to attack and dodge is fun enough to keep the combat enjoyable. The handful of minigames scattered throughout also help to break things up, even if a few of them like the minecart segment or the puzzle game on the S.S. Chuckola kind of suck.
