BandwidthSlayer finished Star Wars: Episode I - Racer
if i played this as a kid it'd probably be one of my favorite games ever made, but discovering this as a 24 year old man sure made me feel like a kid

there is this amazing intersection of amazing controls, satisfying game design, and painstaking attention to detail of the source material that seems almost surreal given what you usually expect from these sorta licensed games and star wars games.

something always has to give somewhere. either is cool but the gameplay is kinda basic or its really fun but very limited or the whole thing is just sorta only good in retrospect. for some reason, this n64 racing game is that perfect intersection.

will gladly play this over mario kart 64 any day

BandwidthSlayer completed Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promathia
feels kind of impossible to review this/assign a score because of how final fantasy xi works nowadays, so instead i'll just talk about it here.

the story and characters are of course very cool, and all the zones and dungeons to explore are beautiful. tavnazia is one of the most underrated and special locations in final fantasy ever. however, the way this story is presented and written does make me understand why xiv and its expansions insist on such meandering expository pacing. xi moves at a mile a minute and hardly gives you time to process and appreciate whatever is going on.

there are some really cool twists and turns in the narrative that would probably hit a lot better in a more well presented form, but it does a good job in having such a narrative at all.

al'taieu one of the coolest final areas in this franchise ever

boy oh boy the xiv content drought has me going on some interesting activities lol

BandwidthSlayer commented on unforeseenboy's review of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner - Soul Hackers
nemissa is cool cuz you can just use her instead of interacting with this game's summoning/fusion mechanics and it'll work great lol

BandwidthSlayer finished Star Wars: Squadrons
fun stuff and very cool presentation but suffers from an extreme identity crisis.

not at all a flight sim, but not a cool arcade-y on rails star fox sorta game either. its fun flying around and shooting stuff, controls feel great, but it doesn't really hone in on a niche.

the story has some neat characters and fun interactions and some very fun set pieces but its basically just an elaborate tutorial for a dead pointless multiplayer mode.

what's here is cool for what it is but the whole product feels like such an afterthought

BandwidthSlayer finished Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope: The Last Spark Hunter
basically just an extra world for sparks of hope, but its a really fun and cool extra world so what more can i ask for lol

i think its funny that this dlc has this whole musical motif but the world itself largely sticks to very ambient and atmospheric music, even compared to the presentation of the base game's worlds. battle themes still go crazy tho

fuggit i vote for rabbid peach for smash bros 6. super hyped to try the rayman dlc

BandwidthSlayer finished Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
super cool game!

finally got around to playing this. loved 12 so much, when i learned the game had a follow up on a nintendo device and it was a strategy game i knew i had to play. like c'mon, a final fantasy xii sequel strategy rpg. is made for me.

and ya in a lot of ways its exactly that, but the gameplay is not super well balanced and tends to be either kind of a pushover or very annoying, in part because of this game's super up-front grind check level scaling. couple that with big maps and slow movement and a healthy bit of lag and you have an uhhh dated experience.

game's still good tho. is fun micromanaging all your party members and armies of summons to run the table with stuff and once ya get in the rhythm of cycling through abilities its quite fun, works well with the ds hardware.

story is great, although some of the returning characters feel like a bit of an afterthought. its still nice to see everyone again, but the new stuff is very well done, although the shift in writing is obvious. the transition from how a character like basch talks in xii, to him invoking the power of friendship here is jarring.

presentation could be better, more of the game's gorgeous art and full animations on the potraits and stuff would've helped deliver the story a bit more.

also the cgi dual screen cutscenes are such a nice treat

BandwidthSlayer commented on weyard's review of Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
dragon quest 9 is either the best one or the worst one depending on who you ask. for most people who didn't play it age 10 it's usually the worst one. i say give 11 a shot next time you are feeling up to it
