What is there to say that hasn’t already been said? Lays the foundation for one of the most nuanced, horrific, beautiful and misunderstood gaming franchises to ever exist and it does so gracefully. Maybe it’s a bias for the series and having played this many times as a kid but it still holds up for me today. I just replayed it and even the controls aren’t as obnoxious as it’s contemporaries. It’s also convoluted in all the right ways. Reading every scrap of paper you find to color in the backstory and make sense of why the town of Silent Hill is the way it is or why you are finding you and your daughter in this horrific situation is a part of what makes this game something you think about long after you’ve saved and turned off your console. The “video games aren’t art” argument is tired and we all know it’s dumb but to this day when I hear someone utter that phrase or I read it online I think of Silent Hill and how much more thoughtfully put together it is than 90% of the other games out there. 90% of tv and film too. This original Team Silent series is something special. They only got better. Until they didn’t (still love you, SH4)

the level design is so fucking fantastic like it is legitimately so tight and amazing idk what else to say about it. the tension, the atmosphere, the b movie but entertaining dialogue and story make for a hell of an experience. the puzzles were also amazing, literally could complete pretty much all of them with enough thought and only had to google a puzzle ONCE. my friend told me that the game was so cryptic and confusing that its frustrating but it was cryptic and confusing in a way where i loved solving the puzzles in a mysterious mansion because the atmosphere compelled me and i felt so smart for solving the puzzles

Heres my horror hot take. SH2 is overrated. Im sorry. Its not a bad game but id tried playing it twice and both times i didnt care for it. I was kinda happy it was over when i beat it. Much prefer SH1 and SH3.

if games had stopped aiming for graphical fidelity/realism beyond what this game achieves the medium would be lightyears ahead as a vehicle of storytelling & communication (and a more ethical one at that). anything beyond heather's model is diminishing returns.

A game made by depressed communists about depressed communists for depressed communists.

Disco Elysium is one of the few games I have absolutely no problems calling a genuine masterpiece. It wasn't until I got to the end of the game that I realised I'd projected my own real life problems onto Harry and had been working on having him improve them despite making no similar effort on myself out of game.

My introduction to the Metal Gear series and what a lasting impression this game had on me. This game came to me at a very hard time in my life and my god it was just a fantastic experience. Practically a playable piece of cinema that just has this whole complex lore to it. The final twist at the end really gives it a trippy twin peaks feel with a sci-fi kind of touch on it. So worth the time to go out and play this entry in the Metal Gear series!

"Max, you're in a Letterboxd Review.", Funny as hell, it was the most horrible thing I could think of.

Max Payne has aged insanely well, from the hyperbole style of writing to the immaculate sound/level design. I just wish that the current port on Steam didn't have so many issues. I had to install a third party application to fix the audio issues and the game crashed more times then I can count on one hand, one of the missions is just unbeatable if you save in the middle of it. Overall, definitely worth trying in the modern era of gaming.
