The games that started it all. They’re still great, but very dated especially when compared to its later remakes. If you’re new to the series and want to experience Gen 1, play the remakes on GBA. You can fully play RBY first, but they really show their age.

I remember being so excited for this when it was coming out. I begged my parents for more allowance to be able to get a Xbox card to get the game. Then I played it. It was fine at the time. Now, it’s just ok. It’s better than episode 1 by far. But it’s just ok.

Played on Gameboy Advance Online on Nintendo Switch.

You can really tell this was made by the team who made Sonic 1 and not 2/3K.

This is definitely the first game in the series. While the version included in Sonic Origins Plus has many enhancements, like the spin dash, drop dash, 16:9 support, it still isn’t as good as Sonic 2 or 3K. The name of the game is speed, but many of the zones aren’t built around it. Hell, as soon as you’re out of Green Hill you’re in Marble Garden, my least favourite and slowest level. It’s still a good game and still holds up, but the others are so much better.

Literally just 4 levels. Each based a zone from episode 1 but you have a Metal Sonic skin on. I remember being excited for this when I first heard about it in 2012. It sucked then and it sucks now.

These are the definitive releases of the classic Sonic games. Sega finally releasing the Whitehead version of 1 and 2 on consoles (plus CD on current/last gen as opposed to stuck on 360/PS3), plus having part of the Mania team remaster 3K was great. There are a lot of glaring issues with each game that should not exist, especially with the games that were remastered a decade ago. But having all the classic games available in 16:9 HD/4K with a ton of enhancements, such as cutscenes that show the full story and bridge the games together make this the definitive version to play.

The missions included are a nice bonus. Some of the later ones can really test even hardcore Sonic fans.

Game Gear games are a nice addition, but the emulation for sound is bad. Fun to play for a minute, then probably not again. It would’ve been cool if Plus included a remastered (or hell, even just an emulated) version of Knuckles Chaotix, as I don’t believe it’s ever been rereleased.

Not as fun as the base game or Tomb Raider DLC. Some levels are fine, while others can be extremely tedious. Some took me multiple sessions to fully clean because it was taking too long.

A lot more refined than the first game and CD. The level design is vastly improved. This game overall is a lot more fun. There’s some frustrating moments, but the good greatly outweighs any negatives.

A fun add on to the base game. For long time Tomb Raider fans, the locations and items you clean will be immediately recognizable.
