Working Designs

In hindsight, a game localization company that arbitrarily gatekeeps via reductive difficulty and throws slurs at you in concerning fake accents is pretty indicative of the direction that cult classic import game culture would go! Hmm!!! Very curious!!

I'm so glad there exists patches for most of their games that undoes their shitty difficulty changes. Too bad much can't be done for localizations.

@mobilespider One of my discord friends (not on this site) thinks the working designs translations are good, and I have no idea to take their word for it or not, so I have to waste space by keeping two different mods of a bunch of games that either retain it or don't, but still get rid of the difficulty increase. It's nonsensical, but I'm kinda glad these options exist lmao.

from a distance they're probably hit and miss, like i feel popful mail is generally loved and has solid voice direction that fits the 90's dub cartoon vibe. but then stuff like alundra seemed bad where they added random sex jokes into a seemingly mournful toned game

Popful Mail was the one in question actually, so I guess that would make sense. I'm morbidly curious about my PS1 copy of Alundra now.

i really wanna play alundra, i think it had some staff overlap with landstalker

honestly, i feel like the vibe i see most commonly is people really excited to share dank old games with each other. am i in a bubble, here? i mean, i... yeah, i think i kind of am (i've been in the same tiny irc channel with gamefriends for over 15 years), but the sharing vibe seems fairly prevalent here on backloggd, too.

i hope i'm not misunderstanding!

anyhow, working designs translations are terrible. they have no regard for tone or verisimilitude and now we have dumbass lines about using barney vhs tapes for target practice in lunar forever.
