I don't know why everybody freaks out over Big the Cat. Like... you don't have to play as him. You can just play as Sonic if you want to. All you miss is bonus ending sequence but you still get an ending as Sonic. An ending that is also perfectly fulfilling

Big's gameplay is also like... 30 minutes long at most. And it's fun, too. SA1 is far from perfect but it was probably the best transition into 3D Sonic could have had.
