Ranking All My 2023 Games

Ranking every game I played that came out in 2023

There are technically two games on this list I enjoy playing less than Overwatch 2, but it doesn't matter because this game has two distinct properties. One, it is created almost entirely through greed with a somehow even more predatory system of monetization to it's predecessor. Second, it is the only thing on this list that actively has made a previous game worse. An actual travesty of the form.
I wish I could place this higher... Because it's peak... But it's pretty bad.
An incredibly dull shooter with an aesthetic choice that only exists for a joke and isn't even interesting. Insanely generic.
This game might deserve a few spots higher I just hate reverse bullet hells.
Had breath of the wild not existed, this game would have landed around number seven, but the lack of originality and failing to correct the lack of life in the original game's world mean this game was more of a 70 dollar dlc expansion that was more fun when it was just a hype generator to toss into a nintendo direct.
A fascinating experiment of game design and what you really can do with a game, but I can't get past the point that I don't really enjoy playing it with the sluggish movement and wonky aiming mechanics.
This is the point of the list where I have to acknowledge this year is peak and I don't have any games I don't love. I understand the reasons people don't care for cs2 but the update was the push I needed to finally play, and it's a ton of fun when the people you're fighting aren't the most racist humans alive.
Incredibly goofy platformer with great mechanics that could have reached the top 5 with more linear stages with proper hazards rather than the sorta explorative vibe it has.
The game I've most recently played, it's simple enough that I've said all I have to in my review. It's atmospheric and creepy and that's about it. Real good either way.
I spent about ten months out of this year finally playing through the modern hitman trilogy and it's as good as everyone says. Sprawling levels, infinite replayability, a million ways to kill your targets, everyone's said it all before. I'm not incredibly big on stealth games, but for what it's worth these three are the best ones I've ever played.
I spent the first half of the year confident I wasn't going to play pizza tower and the second half playing pizza tower. It's pretty good.
I'm not usually the one for somewhat mindless shooters but the trove of secrets underneath, and simple mechanics combined with an admittedly really cool gimmick lift it up in my eyes.
I've been playing yomi hustle since about two days after it first released on itch and it's been a blast the whole way. An incredible original gameplay loop that riffs on both fighting games and turn based combat and several characters with incredibly expansive and unique move sets, there's unfortunately not a lot more I can say other than it's fun as hell and I love watching matches back in full speed.
I technically didn't play much of the official release in 2023 but I don't care because world of horror kicks ass and I love it.
This is the only game where spectating your teammates and waiting for them to get snatched up is as fun as playing the game yourself.
Simultaneously incredibly snappy funny writing and some of the biggest bummer endings I've seen in this type of setting, both of which are enhanced by a world class voice acting performance from the entire cast.
This is the most video game-y video game by a wide margin and that is meant entirely as a compliment because god this game is fun. Incredibly vibrant, effortlessly funny, and with a combination of two gameplay genres that enhances both, making a combat experience that refuses to let you button mash and which starts difficult but perfectly fair and only stays that way as it goes on. In so many other years this would be my game of the year.
This is one of the best meldings of narrative and gameplay I have ever seen and it deserves to be played by anybody with the ability to get their hands on it. It's 20% off for the summer sale, it has a demo you can try, go play it right now and learn how right I am.
