I will never understand why people excuse the terrible writing in this game. This probably has the worst story up to this point in the Pokémon series by far. Gameplay is still the embodiment of the strawman people point to when they say "turn-based combat is outdated."

Some things are improved but not enough to make up for all the downgrades. Half the region being water does not work at all.

Truly, am I at a complete loss of words. I will need to ruminate over this game before I can make a full review. Everything about it is so perfect. I admittedly have a handheld bias, as I far prefer to play games on a bigger screen, so the fact that this game has become my favorite of all time should say a lot of its quality. Everything is handled so masterfully. The designs, the dungeons, the gameplay, the world, the lore, the NPCs, the quests, the story, the characters, the dialogue, the themes, the alignments, the music, everything is so perfect. This captures the essence of Megami Tensei so flawlessly.

There is no greater feeling when your favorite game of all time is surpassed.

An amazing game held back by deadlines and budget.

It is not a perfect game, but I find myself thinking back to that last song during the final boss. There's something about that piano I cannot get out of my head.

Rest in piece James McCaffrey. Man's performance made these games what they were.

I implore you to play this game with Japanese audio. The English voice acting is so bland and flanderizes a lot of characters. I cannot believe I went half the game with that mediocre dub. There's a few good characters, namely the house leaders, but most everyone is just a stereotype. The Japanese voice acting is shockingly an improvement. It is such an improvement that even someone who doesn't speak the language should be able to pick up on it. While the English has a few good performances, the Japanese has all great performances. I happened to really like Claude's english voice, but upon switching to Japanese because Lorenz was just so annoying every time he spoke in support dialogue, I was astonished at how much better Lorenz and Claude were in Japanese. For one, they actually talk like real people. I kept playing and I soon discovered that literally everyone was 100 times better, even Dimitri and Edelgard.

I cannot stress enough, if you are not a fan of the characters and they seem soulless or anime, switch to Japanese audio, as it is miles better than you would think.

The game is NOT tailored to how you play like at all and the writing is rather uninspired and unoriginal.

Better than the original in terms of writing and originality. Additionally, your choices actually matter in this game.

I really liked Arcueid's route, but disliked every other.
Ciel's route was okay.
Akiha's was weird.
Hisui's was horrible.
And Kohaku's route was kinda good.

And the H-Scenes are just wtf. I guess they have some funny lines, so I've heard at least - I skipped every H-Scene.

I didn't get to read the remake yet, but considering it doesn't have H-Scenes it is probably better to read that, although it is harder to acquire.

This game is a true masterpiece. The writing is phenomenal and great. I love this game. It's amazing. This is better than Shin Megami Tensei. This is my genuine opinion. Nobody at all is making me say this.
