not enough people (myself included before now) realize just how much triple trouble 16-Bit takes from the original. this is genuinely a really fun game, and i’d even say a few select things (notably atomic destroyer act 2) are better in the OG. this gets a genuine recommendation even alongside the fangame
solid and nostalgic version of the game, just plagued with bugs and long loading times. c-stick camera controls are surprisingly easy to get used to compared to how much people complain about them, but it does result in generally slower reaction times (though this can be a plus in replicating the feel of a first time playthrough for someone otherwise extremely familiar with minecraft). i don’t know if this is just a homebrewed 3DS issue, but autosaves just crash the game lmao, so make sure to manual save when the countdown starts
extremely surprising how solid and genesis-like this title is, first one i replayed to get both the good and bad endings (though that wouldn’t have been worth it if not for the two playable characters.) aspect really learned their lesson after sonic 2. just please for the love of god stop doing pipe mazes
1992
an improvement over the first 8-bit title but far from an adaptation of sonic 2. would probably have a much lower rating without savestates, and scrambled egg zone’s pipe mazes take like a whole star off on its own. some really cool ideas, but i hope chaos is when they start taking more notes from the genesis titles and improving what’s already here

i don’t think my rating has changed, but i think i really misunderstood the ending my first time through.
i do still think it’s flawed; pico being fine still is just straight up weird and the impact they try to impress of the two being dead is really silly considering the amount of times they’re revived both within this game and in other fnf media that the intro implies to be canon. however, thinking on it more and giving the story mode a replay led me to realize that the anticlimax of it is the point, and it’s a point that actually has meaning beyond cheap shock value unlike i initially thought.
the rest of the song having no hazard mechanics, the cutscene into act 4, the pacing of the act itself, and BF’s ability to evade attack in all other songs strongly implies that Ultra M fully expected BF to give up, and with his regret afterwards might have even wanted to keep him alive if he did so. it’s his strong resistance and determination to keep fighting, his love and commitment, and anger at those who would take GF from him, that lead to M ultimately taking a cheap shot, killing the final thing to bring him amusement.
even if this is a reach, it’s a hell of a thing to make such a good story out of a horror-themed rhythm game about mario fan content that it makes someone want to analyze it this much, and i think that counts for something.

might be better for fans of street fighter, but what this game represents as licensed fan media is so much more important and interesting than the game itself, i unfortunately have to admit. it’s even more hyperfocused on Mega Man 2 than 9 was, and it’s generally just not super fun, with art ranging from questionable to terrible.
