Minimally Multiplayer Offline RPGs

or as I like to call them, MMORPGs

a list of (primarily) single-player games with MMO vibes

inclusion is completely arbitrary but bonus points will be awarded to any game that lets you level up "boring" life skills like woodcutting or cooking

Final Fantasy XII

It's Only Money
It's Only Money
takes a LOT of inspiration from GTA Online, so this should come as no surprise to anyone who's played it
Balrum

Project Zomboid

Sun Haven
Sun Haven
Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord
Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord
might seem a bit strange for people who focus mostly on combat but the interactions with people in towns during their quests (+your ability to upgrade and manage these places) give off the right vibes
Hero Siege
Hero Siege
State of Decay 2
State of Decay 2
Wurm Unlimited
Wurm Unlimited
technically cheating, because this originated from an MMO but supports offline servers. i suppose this means i could add something like GTA Online as well, but we won't be doing that
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
stand-in for the series (because it's the only one I've played)
Fantasy Life

Len's Island

when i was making this list i did not expect to hear about an actual, marketed-as-such "single-player MMO" a month later

this is the most controversial thing I will ever say but we're it not always online, 2007scape would be a pitch perfect inclusion. across 2000+ hours I think I have engaged meaningfully with another human once, and there is straight up no incentive to seek out interaction

@Detchibe: That's honestly the experience I've been trying to replicate in my search for games like these, because I found myself thinking about OSRS and New World and how both of these games let you fuck off to the woods for a quasi-idle game experience of chopping trees for an hour to increase your Wood Chopper level

because it's not really an idle game that I want, it's the idea of coming back to something in the long term to steadily improve a character/the world around me

no xenoblade ?

gothic sort of has this vibe w grinding skills but it isn't quite that

zomboid is based heavily on ccda and u could prob make the same argument for similar sandbox-y roguelikes

would love for folks to tackle this in the form of like singleplayer graphical muds, which I'm not even sure exist, because it's a really fun format for it

@clownswords: Good call on each of those - I found that I wanted to draw the line short of including roguelikes because 1. they'd dominate the list, but also, 2. permadeath would ruin the fantasy for a lot of people, I think.

Fantasy Life would be a good fit too

— .Hack// (any game)
— Dark Souls II
— Darksiders II
— Divinity II (2009)
Maybe some PSO games like Blue Burst would fit nice but I haven't played it.
For Gothic, Arcania: Gothic 4 has a bit of that single-player MMO feel, but I still wouldn't include it.
For Xenoblade I would say it's X rather than 2
