Modern FromSoftware Ranked

Nothing here!

Demon's Souls
Demon's Souls
I played this on the PS5 launch day and was enamored with it. Despite being the oldest of the bunch, it holds up remarkably well. The exploration, helped along with the remade visuals, is fantastic. And while I understand a lot of Soulsborne fans are not especially keen on the bosses, I love the puzzle-like boss design. It certainly isn't the most difficult FromSoft title, but it was the most enjoyable for me.

Bloodborne
Bloodborne
The horror theme mixes so well with the Soulsborne formula, and the transforming weapons are still so cool. We desperately need a sequel.

Bloodborne PC when?

2

Dark Souls III
Dark Souls III
The game that got me into Soulsborne games, and occupied a very large percentage of my freshman year in university. The locations are great, the bosses are great, The Ringed City is great; it's just a great time.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Easily the most difficult experience FromSoft has offered thus far. By constraining the player's toolset, FromSoft was allowed to design bosses with the player's exact power level and move set in mind. There isn't much bullshit here; you simply must git gud.

However, I missed all the RPG elements, even if forgoing them made for a tighter experience.

Dark Souls: Remastered
Dark Souls: Remastered
The world design of the original DS is still unmatched by any FromSoft title. While the fast travel from later games is convenient, the interconnection of the world was lost in the process. Later games feature individual levels cleverly strung together, but DS features an entire world.

That said, later entries simply play better.

I've played a good chunk of Dark Souls, but I have shamefully never finished it. One of these days I'll get around to it...

Elden Ring
Elden Ring
Bigger isn't always better. The world created by FromSoft is great; this is perhaps the best exploration in any Soulsborne game to date. However, it came at a cost: Elden Ring contains the sloppiest design FromSoft has put out to date.

Ongoing issues that have been ignored for years rear their ugly heads here: massive bosses paired with an ancient camera, ridiculously long boss combos to try to compensate for player's increasing skill prowess, basic technical issues (no DLSS? stuttering?), and more. Exploration, as opposed to bosses, has always been the main draw for me with these games. Nonetheless, I've always enjoyed FromSoft's bosses—except here. Most of these bosses aren't fun; they're just annoying.

The more time goes on, the less I like Elden Ring and the more I appreciate previous FromSoft titles for their tighter design.

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin
Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin
DS2 has a ton of really interesting ideas that I wish FromSoft would've returned to in later titles. However, this game just feels...off compared to everything else. It feels as if a different studio made a Dark Souls game.
