The world, its detail and scale are this game's crowning achievement. Sadly, while the gunplay is fun, the A to B mission design makes getting through the game a slow grind. And the story has so much backstabbing and shadow players it's downright comical.
Character progression isn't the best either: upgrade materials are so scarce that you'll stick to the same couple weapons for the entire game, and most of the armor pieces have such pronounced disadvantages that again, you'll stick to the same all-rounder pieces throughout the entire game. Oh well, at least there's a transmog system.
It's so close to being an easy recommend, but there's so much wading through slow running, rudimentary mission design and insipid characters to get to the fun bits. Especially considering the severe difficulty spikes in the last couple missions.

I really tried to like this one, but while it captures the feel of the series nicely, and the car and melee combat are satisfying in a vacuum, it's the progression that makes it so hard to complete. The grind in Just Cause 3 is much easier to stomach when it's not tied to this really slow gameplay, and Mad Max is the prime example: completing camps takes forever, there's not a lot to do when going from A to B and the story missions aren't very exciting, constantly requiring you to get resources to build determined car models that you'll swap out of instantly.

While it is very clearly following in Post Void's footsteps, it carves out its own identity with its charming style and unique twists. There's a steady flow of new challenges introduced in every chapter, and it's fast paced.
And while the colorful VHS OVA aesthetic can be overwhelming, the bright signposting always leads you the right way, and enemies clearly stand out from their environments. I just wish there was more incentive to replay it, because outside of some cosmetics: there's little variety to level layouts and character upgrades and certain weapons, namely the shotgun and SMG, are completely broken once fully upgraded. Endless mode had me just wishing for those two showing up every time I finished a level.
Still, there's enough satisfying combat and soul here to charm anyone; it's hard to fault a game that executes a core idea so well, in such a short but engrossing runtime.
