re mind: i like this version of the finale better tbh, it really clears things up that weren't really explained in the base game. funny how sonic frontiers would basically do the same thing years later. and more scala ad caelum is appreciated. also holy crap they freaking killed him.

limitcut:
this is retribution for spamming sonic blade in re:com, isn't it?

the story feels a little fanfic-y at times, but that's fine by me. i love fanfic-y stories. i'm so happy that roxas and xion got a happy ending here, and i have no idea why the ending nearly made me cry because i don't even care for eraqus that much.

also, i think the script wasn't translated properly in some parts, because some of the simpler things weren't really explained very well. like everyone thought dark riku was riku-ansem because they don't remember the events of chain of memories (except riku, idk what his excuse was), but it was actually a recreation of riku replica. okay, that makes sense. but the way riku replica explained it was so weird.

fun little tech demo, now please bring back customization in kh4. i want to play as catboy maid sora.

i'm going to be honest, symphony of sorcery alone gives this game a lot of points. anyway, the 3ds and hd versions are about equal in my eyes. the hd version has significantly better controls, but the gimmicks (dream eaters and reality shifts) are much more fun on the 3ds.

definitely the most fun handheld entry, but it contributes nothing to the overall plot. i hesitate to call it "skippable," but it's the only game that isn't required to play (unless data-sora somehow comes into play in the lost master saga).

the good:
- i really like the story, even though terra's is literally just revenge of the sith
- ventus and vanitas are really interesting characters
- the music, generally, is pretty good
- shotlocks

the bad:
- the difficulty curve is very steep, like you'll fight through enemies in radiant garden easily but then you'll do chip damage to even common floods in the next worlds
- disney. f*cking. town.
- the worlds feel a little too small, which is understandable for a psp game, but then half of them are like mazes
- ventus's story feels like it adds nothing to the overall plot until the finale

the verdict:
casting the star wars guy and the star trek guy as the two opposing forces was the funniest thing disney has ever done

"roxas... i'm out of time..." 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

WHY IS THIS SO GOOD? WHY DO I WANT TO CRY EVERY TIME I PLAY? YOU DESERVE SO MUCH BETTER, ROXAS!!!

not too bad once you learn how to spam sonic blade

they got a lot right with this first game, but why is this the one that has the best, most fluid animations out of all of them?

"dear liberals,
if i'm not supposed to do the genocide route, then how come that's where the best fights take place?
checkmate, atheists."

- turning point surface

(disclaimer: i have only played through the pacifist route at the time of me writing this) prior to playing this game, i never once thought a piece of fan media could make me cry.

this is quite simply the best game i've ever played, and i've played a lot of games. maybe it's just the nostalgia talking, but there's so much to love with this game. the music, the story, the writing, the gameplay, what's not to love? also it's hilarious that this game and undertale have so many similarities that sometimes i wonder if it's coincidental or not. magical rainbow hearts, an otaku lizard that makes robots and has very vocal opinions on the media they consume, the final area is a monochrome castle, the person you think is the main antagonist is a noble who falls too deep into the darkness after losing his love (kind of a stretch...?), the final boss is a side character you barely interact with who was pulling the strings the whole time so that he can gain more power and become a god. there's even a track in the game (sammer's kingdom) that kinda sounds like part of finale.

anyway please play this game it's so good, you will laugh and cry the whole way through.

now that i've finished this, my opinion still stands. this is one of my favorite pieces of metafiction... ever. the way it keeps you guessing with all its twists and turns, the chilling cliffhanger, the fact that you never know what to believe and who to trust for half the game, all sets it up to be an incredible thriller, too. night springs is a hilarious tribute to the twilight zone, and the soundtrack is perfect. the only complaints i can think of are 1) the gameplay can get a bit repetitive at times (walk forward for a bit, fight some taken, maybe solve some puzzles), 2) dodging perfectly is really hard to perform (at least on pc), and 3) the finale was a little underwhelming. i was kind of expecting a huge boss fight with the dark presence, but whatever. pretty good game overall.
