This is my fav of the hack and slash era. The graphics got a huge upgrade, the combat feels more fluid and fun, the story takes a front and center seat for the most part, and Kratos actually grows as a character at the end, it’s all the best parts of the previous two put into one game. This is such and fun and enjoyable game that it’s on par with some of the DmC games for me.

ME BIG SPARTAN MAN
ME KILL
EVILEST DAD
OF ALL

Very fun, boss fights every 10 mins which is the best thing in this game. Killing the Greek gods is the dumbest, entertaining thing for no reason.

The ultimate refinement of the God of War trilogy (plus PSP games)

Looks amazing running on PS5, gameplay smooth as can be and THE MOST VIOLENT GAME EVER MADE.

By all rights I should hate this game. A combo juggler spectacle action game full of QTEs, and that head-down, eyes-up XTREME gamebro rage fantasy from the early 2000s. It's the kind of game that makes spindly 13 year old boys breathlessly whisper, "That's so badass...". It's downright cringey to play in front of other people.

And yet…

The larger-than-life spectacle of it is, well, spectacular, and I can never get enough Greek mythology. The set pieces are incredible, and there are some interesting environmental puzzles in between the bloodthirsty combat sequences.

And in a great favor to unskilled gamers like me, the easy mode is REALLY easy. You can just sit back, mash buttons, and enjoy the ride.

Nobody told me the part where you use a lady as a door-stopper was immediately after a dog-kicking puzzle

"Zeus! Your son has returned! I bring the destruction of Olympus!"

The best God of War game. Best bosses, story, music, gameplay and brutality. I could play this game every day and not get bored.

Great game but for some reason it feels so hollow to me. Kratos looks better than ever, everything about the gameplay has been polished to a mirror sheen, the bosses are bigger and better than ever... but it just doesn't have that same punch God of War 2 had.

I blame the departure of Corey Barlog midway through production which altered the story significantly. Barlog was director on 2 and 4 aka the two best in the series and I think without his vision this was doomed to be mediocre.

I really liked the way they laid out the QTEs.

God of War usually defines the generation of consoles it’s released on. God of War III was no exception. We were already halfway into the PS3’s lifecycle before we got God of War, but it was well worth the wait. It was bigger, better, faster, and more epic and violent than any previous game.

We also already had two PSP games by this point, so there was a lot of content for the team to look upon, and it did take some inspiration from the PSP versions as they were the latest games in the series. God of War III sees Kratos continuing his journey to kill Zeus and destroy all of Olympus for refusing to take away the nightmares of killing his wife and daughter.

The game starts out more epic than any other God of War game, or any game at all for that matter. You are battling Titans in God of War III with Gaia being the first one. Running around a giant colossal enemy and destroying it from the outside it is just something that has never been done or ever done since. Right off the bat, the game feels smoother, silkier, and more responsive than ever before. The game has amazing lighting effects with glow and shines on every object and Kratos’ Blades of Exile look amazing in action. It’s still jaw-dropping even today to see something of this scale play on your screen.

Combat isn’t just smoother, but slightly more enhanced with new layers added. There is a new Item meter that recharges on its own and allows you to use various items such as Apollo’s Bow and Helios’ Head. This allows the team to focus more on balancing combat and using these items for puzzle solving rather than strictly combat. Magic items are now attached to the four weapons. Each weapon has a unique magic attack which balances combat and keeps it from feeling the same as other games. There is also a new X button combo that allows Kratos to combo through all four weapons which is just awesome to see. I don’t want to spoil the new weapons as they are as big a part of God of War as the enemies and story, but they are awesome and the best weapons yet in any God of War game.

The game also feels like it just flows better this time around. There is no longer a central hub that the game focuses on, but you do backtrack to a few beginning areas briefly which is fine. The game is very balanced and I never felt overwhelmed except toward the end of the game which is expected. New enemies are introduced with gobs of gore and violence with more detail. You can actually rip out a Cyclops eye, disembowel a Centaur General, and some enemies have multiple stage circle button prompts which is a lot of fun. The button prompts are also moved to the sides of the screen corresponding to button placement on the controller and they flash keeping you from having to miss a prompt. They aren’t as heavy-handed this time around and feel more natural, but the best parts are the boss fights. They are challenging, deadly, and gruesome that leaves such a great smile on your face.

The environments are more impressive than ever with larger than life structures and multi-tiered areas that span miles and miles. It’s insane how all this worked and was crammed on the PS3 hardware. Daedalus’ Labyrinth with giant floating boxes and gauntlets of platforming segments to test your skills and reflexes.

This is actually the third time I’ve played this game and it amazes me with every playthrough, I never get tired of it. The PS4 remaster adds a coat of paint to an already great looking game. The visuals are less blurry, sharper, and the game runs at a solid 60FPS. The textures do look ugly in spots, but that was PS3 limitations, but overall the far away shots look amazing.

Overall, God of War III is still an amazing game to this day. It was one of the best PS3 games to be released and is a must-have for PS4 owners. Sadly, the previous games were not included, so if you jump into this game you won’t understand a single thread of the story.

Played on: Classic PS4 | Completed

General thoughts: Lots of fun, but after 2 games of the franchise, it feels a little repetitive, and over the top

Gameplay: 3/5 - It's basically like the previous games but it feels like you have less options and variety

Narrative: 2/5 - It doesn't make much sense, and everything is an overkill, but from time to time it get's interesting enough

OST: 3/5 - Kind of the same feeling as the previous games overall. nothing too extravagant.

Soul: 3/5 - You can see that they put passion and love into this game, but sometimes it feels a little lazy.

Visual design / Atmosphere / Worldbuilding 2.5/5: you get to see some cool representations of Greek mythology, but in my opinion it does not reach the levels of atmosphere as 1 or 2

Difficulty design 3.5/5: Titan Difficulty is very fun and entertaining, you get what you are looking for

Nostalgia factor: N/A

I've been going on a journey through God of War since July and this one has been favorite game in the series by far. It's gorgeous and it's been such a blast to playthough. Once I started it, I struggled to put it down and ended up finishing it way before I expected.

It's hard to decribe the experience without spoiling the events but to put it simply, the journey in God of War III is truly epic from start to finish. The battles you face throughout the story are plenty and they really pay off.

I felt that parts of the final segment of the game kind of dragged a bit, but it was for the conclusion of an epic saga that had been building up since the first game so I can see why Santa Monica Studio went all-in on these moments. Plus the ending is sure to leave players satisfied, I know I sure was.

I was forcing myself to finish this one, because while the production design is over the top, and excellent, the gameplay is at it's all time low, offering recycled ideas, dumbed down puzzles and overall, a worse game.

What a weird game. The developer's all-consuming desire to top themselves and finish off their trilogy on the highest possible note produced something impressive but bloated and wildly uneven.

First of all, and most confusingly, the fidelity of both the visuals and the sound are all over the place. You'll have a genuinely incredible-looking Kratos standing next to other characters who seem like they're straight off the PS2, and some of the voice performances (especially the Ghost of Sparta himself!) sound like their lines were recorded in one take on someone's old Talkboy.

The combat is more complex than ever, but most of the new weapons are totally extraneous, and the game is about twice as long as it should be. Even with how much fun combat was, I was begging for the game to end long before I got to the (honestly pretty unmemorable) final boss fight.

It's like every single idea anyone at the company had over however many years of development made it in, and they were all cobbled together at random with no standard of quality or polish between it all. Hits and misses, weird diversions, redundant and repetitive areas, shaky writing, desperately out-of-place fourth-wall breaks and game references ... I was baffled the whole time. But that's not to say it was a bad experience. If the combat wasn't so good, it might have been intolerable, but thankfully they had that foundation locked down well enough, so it was easy to see it through.

Less is more, guys!

FACE ME, FATHER. IT'S TIME TO END THIS.
YES, MY SON... IT IS TIME.

Definitely the best game in the original series. More of the same and has a few of the same problems of the older games (such as some annoying enemies, wonky platforming, and a lack of interesting narrative driving it forward) but feels better to play and has more interesting weapons and abilities than previous entries. Ending was kind of bad but I wasn't playing this for the story. Glad I waiting until after playing Ascension and all of the others to play this one because I would have dropped Ascension hard if I had gone from this to that.

Ragnarok replay continuation

You know, going in I was thinking that this game could get worse this playthrough and that it wouldn’t be as good as my first playthrough

Nah it’s just as perfect as that first playthrough

ZEUUUUUS! YOUR SON HAS RETURNED!

ZEUS! YOUR SON HAS RETURNED I COME SEEKING THE WEED OF OLYMPUS

i beat up zeus for 10 minutes before i realised i could stop

The best God Of War experience in my opinion. I takes what's amazing about the other games before it and ramps them up to 100%. The story is lacking but it works off the back of the games that came before. Amazing game

Wow! Truly an outstanding action game, everything is upped another level in terms of the combat, especially the boss fights and the pure scale and scope of pretty much everything.

Puzzles take a bit of a back seat, personally feel there could have been more of an emphasis on them but it's not a huge deal.
