My rating for this game would likely be much lower had I played the original mafia II because after seeing gameplay of the original, this is a really poor remaster as the graphics aren't all that much better apart from a few good looking cutscenes here and there and this game can get pretty buggy.

Despite that though, as someone who hadn't already experienced this game before, I really enjoyed this game for the most part. The characters are really engaging and the story is fantastic. Not massively overblown and dramatic, alot of the activities within this game seem really realistic as to what would go on in an organised crime group.

The melee combat, while extremely simplistic, is very fun. The guns are nicely authentic for a post - WW2 game but I don't find the gunfire to be all that satisfying, it's a little bit flat.

I liked this game for the story largely, the charm and realism makes it a really fun playthrough but like I said, as a remaster it's very flawed

Great game and it is very definitive!

Quite good for the most part - definitely not as well written as the original, but more fun to play. It is a shame this is the buggiest game I've played aside from Cyberpunk at launch. Driving was a nightmare - every minute or so I would get screen tearing type pixel effect; and during night-time the lights would be so bright the screen was basically just white. But knowing it was short and enjoying it otherwise pushed me through it. It probably doesn't deserve the remake treatment the first game got, but it definitely deserved more care and respect.

This remaster is buggier than the underside of a rock but it gave me a lot to think about in regards to my overall disliking of the open world genre. The city, much like the previous Mafia title, offers very little other than an expanse of land to drive around between and during missions. There's barely anything to do other than go between objectives, no map screen littered with loads of busywork to do. However, I found this infinitely more palatable and more effective at drawing me into the world than things like Assassin's Creed or Horizon, with their large swathes of empty, open space jam packed with filler content. I've been trying to put my finger on exactly what it is that allows me to tolerate the issues found here while I'll bounce off something like Ghost of Tsushima really hard and honestly, all I can put it down to is "driving a car around some roads in an interesting, atmospheric city >>>>> spending hours wandering over fields on some horse". The brilliant soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting but there's an undeniable atmosphere here that drew me into the world.

It's obviously not the best game ever made but it plays the greatest hits of the early post-GTA 3 open world games and mob movies, with some really good performances backing up the characters and that's enough to keep it engaging for the 10-12 or so hours you'll spend in Empire Bay.

As a slight aside, this game features a 'warning' of sorts in regards to the dialogue and how it is presented 'as is' from the original 2004 release. The game is packed full of casual racism and other offensive terms. Now, I'm not in the demographic for any of these to land, so I'm definitely not the right person to be making a judgement call on any of this, but personally I found the unflinchingly 'authentic' dialogue of the 40s/50s part of what made Mafia 2's world feel so believable and I'm intrigued by how this feeds into Mafia 3.

barely a remaster and there are quite a bit of visual and performance bugs but holy moly i dont think i have ever played a more racist game than this, basically the only slur not said was the n word

9H 47M Time played

This game was just a lot of fun from start to finish. The Narrative, Characters, Side Content were all crafted with a lot of passion. I beat this game a few days ago now and I'm still thinking about the ending, it was just so memorable. The amount of details in this game is simply amazing for a game of its time. The open-world was designed so intelligently and there are a million outcomes that make me wanna come back for more. There is a surprising amount of replayability in this game which I know I'm gonna love next time I pick this game back up. Gameplay wise it's definitely a bit dated now but it's nowhere near unplayable I still had a ton of fun with it. There was good balancing and weapon variety that would always keep it interesting. The Radio tracks in this game are great and remind me of how much I love that era of music. The Driving sections are solid but at times they feel a bit drawn out in comparison to the Mafia 1 Remake where you could have a companion there for company and the ride seemed much shorter as a result. Although I rarely ran into any problems with this game glitch/bug wise it did crash 3 times when I was in the middle of a mission so I had to completely restart so it was a pain at the rare times it actually happened. All in all if you like third person shooters with a great story I implore you to play this game.
9/10

Gameplay is strong but not as good as Mafia III imo. Story however is incredibly tight and interesting. Fantastic game if you are into mob/gangster/crime stories/films.

What a masterpiece, the story, the pace, the reality, it's not one of those tales where everything happens in an instant and you become the President, it's a grind and it's painful.

The friendship binds you beyond the screen.

74/100

It was great, though I did stumble upon a a few technical errors, I enjoyed the story of Vito and the downward spiral his life takes as the life he wanted only put him in the same place. The gameplay felt directly refined with better combat, like a surprising depth to melee.

Once again a great story but really feels like a game from 2010 despite being a remaster and the ending is kinda ass

Mr Salieri sends his regards.

Mafia 2 in my opinion is the perfect sequel to the 1st game and comes out as a better game at the end of it. The story is somehow better, with two great likeable characters in Joe and Vito and a narrative that takes you on an emotional journey full of great missions and enjoyable characters.

When it comes to the setting in Mafia 2, as soon as you take the first car ride through Empire Bay you can see how perfect the devs have got that 1940s America vibe. The streets are busy, the shops and billboards all have that oldies aesthetic and the radio station plays some great 40s classics that really help drive that atmosphere home. Its also really nice to see that the environment changes depending what era you're in, as the game takes place in both the 40s and the 50s. The car models change, the music changes and so does the city around you. Little things like that really help immerse you.

So if the environment is perfect for the setting, what about the characters? Everybody you meet in this game is exactly what you'd expect an Italian-American mobster to be. As for the main character Vito Scaletta, wow what a character, and the same goes for his partner in crime Joe Barbaro who has some of the funniest one-liners in the game. 2K really hit the nail on the head with their character writing again.

The gameplay in Mafia 2 is such an improvement on the first (even compared to the remake), with shooting and driving feeling a lot more smoother and less frustrating to work your way around. There were also less times I found myself getting annoyed with a mission. In Mafia 1, there are quite a few missions that have you tearing your hair out but this one didn't really do that for me, with my time playing being a lot more enjoyable on this title. It's definitely still very simplistic and could maybe benefit from some more unique missions, but that's what you get with these sort of games

The story of this game is stellar. The best in the Mafia series and I hope if there is a 4th game, that they take a lot of inspiration from this one. There are a lot more unforgettable moments in this game that had me laughing, crying or just happy as hell. As mentioned earlier, Joe and Vito really make this narrative shine, bringing the magic to those scenes while you're playing.

Something I would like to point out though, is that if you are going to play this game, I would suggest going for the classic edition. Unfortunately this port has a lot of audio and visual glitches that happen throughout the game. The devs haven't fixed them since the Mafia bundle dropped so I doubt they are going to do anything anytime soon

Bugs aside though, I really did love this game and would highly recommend checking it out. It's just a shame everything goes downhill from this title

Love the story, but damn the ending sucked; far too abrupt with hardly any resolution (although I do like Joe’s ambiguous fate; I just wish it was made more clear that Vito is now stuck in a life he probably doesn’t want anymore).

The gameplay was about as enjoyable same as the first game (the remake), although gunplay was very repetitive after awhile.

The attention to detail in open world design was stunning and it was a joy to drive around and listen to all the classic hits.

Overall a fun if somewhat dated experience with a great story for the most part and a lot of passion for period authenticity.

Mafia II is an amazing game. Mafia II: Definitive Edition is not. Sure its on newer consoles and comes with its (awful) dlc but this is a downgrade in many ways and is bugged all the way to hell. Even streaming the ps3 version on Playstation Now with bad internet would be a better experience

6.5/10

Yeah, no. This game might have been a masterpiece when it was released but it's a chore to play today. Story is messier than my room, characters are so one dimensional that i might have lost some of my already lacking brain cells. Skip it unless you have your rose-tinted nostalgia glasses on.

Now this... oof. I feel like this review is insanely unfair, but as someone who didn't play the original when it came out and doesn't have any nostalgia to it?

This game sucks.

The entire time it felt like I was playing a scuffed version of GTA IV, the story felt like it went nowhere exciting in its entire runtime, the characters had nearly nothing to them, Vito doesn't have the 'cool' factor Tommy has, and I kinda just... wanted it to end. Any character who had any sort of real personality either died or Joe. Who might have ALSO died lmao, I dunno.

The game is plagued with problems, crashes that cause you to restart a whole chapter at times, awful checkpointing, performance drops in the middle of nothing, and it kinda just stuck ass.

If I played this when it came out, I might've enjoyed it more, but as someone experiencing it for the first time in 2021 after playing a really well done remake, it just wasn't up to par. I wish they got the same team who did the Mafia 1 remake to do this one as well, because the quality difference is just ridiculous.

Well, where to start...
Graphically it is a disaster, they did not take the same work as for Mafia I, the world is full of bugs and visual glitches (they are not the only ones)
The story is perhaps the least weak point of the game, Vito is a great character as is Joe.
And the worst point of the game, by far (besides the TERRIBLE artificial intelligence) are the glitches it has, I had to restart missions, the game and the console several times, the version I played is the definitive edition on PS5, the truth is a disaster

My favorite game of all time.

This game is perfect when it comes to pretty much everything, replayability, narrative, characters, controls, and graphics.

You can explain about all the cringy shit when you realize 2K Czech was involved.

Still a pretty solid little experience. Breezes by. The open world isn't meant for exploration but you can stumble upon some neat details and entertaining A.I. if you fool around. Gunplay is still weak. There's nothing to it. I remember thinking the melee was so deep and I'm just out here holding X down and watching the A.I. make a fool of itself.

4 needless porno mags out of 5.

maybe im crazy but this game felt like such a downgrade from the first. I enjoyed the first one when I played it on steam a couple years ago but I decided to finally play this one when it was on sale on playstation. idk if the console contributes to this games glitches but omg they are god awful. the story is like fine I guess,, but its not good enough to justify the annoying ass glitches and subpar gameplay. every time I got softlocked somewhere and had to restart my game (which was often) I would proceed to not play the game for like a week LOL. idk this was disappointing. maybe 3 will be better

edit: oh yeah also the various.. slurs!! made me uncomfortable

Boring. Boring cliché characters in a boring cliché mob story. Boring stale GTA gameplay. Bugs. Glitches. Even the voice acting sounded poorly recorded and distorted at times, which is a first. Nothing here that hasn't been done much better in other games.

Man, PS Plus offerings are getting worse and worse.
